Sports don't start and end with a referee's whistle. FirstCuts, a blog dedicated to sports culture, will cover everything outside the lines, from games to gear.
Because there's always a little news we don't get to on the weekend, (Didn't you see we were clearly busy live blogging all the NFL fun?) we bring you a quick recap of a few tidbits from the weekend and late last week.
Much like the question Yahtzee, the author of Zero Punctuation reviews, poses about Mario and Bowser -- they fight seemingly to the death, but they also hang out for social interaction -- we're left to wonder why Sonic is playing tennis with Dr. Eggman from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Anyway, the game looks fun, and I've already established a weak spot for tennis games, so bring it on.
Also (sort of) advancing previous news about the Wii Fit, and a bunch of other Wii titles coming in '08, Nintendo put out some amorphous release "dates." The list is pretty gigantic, and you can read the whole thing at NintendoWiiFanboy.com, including releases for the Nintendo DS, but here are the sports-relevant titles. The "Q2" release seems to fit with the notion that the game could release on May 20 in the U.S.
Feb. 27: Kidz Sports Soccer from Destineer
February: Yamaha Supercross from DSI Games
April: Pro Evolution Soccer from Konami
June: Ford Racing Off Road from Empire Interactive
Spring: Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel from Nintendo
Spring: Major League Baseball® 2K8 from 2K Sports
Spring: Don King Presents: Prizefighter from 2K Sports
Spring: Top Spin 3 from 2K Sports
Summer: Deca Sports from Hudson
Summer: Active Life: Outdoor Challenge from Namco Bandai Games America Inc.
Q2: Wii Fit from Nintendo
I'm excited about Wii Fit, and we're all intrigured to see how the controller scheme works with Pro Evolution Soccer, but it seems like sports lovers continue to be better off sticking with the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.
