Golf Channel Announcer Says Something Very Wrong

By Spencer Hall

In all the furor over the national title game, I missed something really rare: an interesting golf story. The Golf Channel's Laura Tilghman, an analyst and onair personality, suggested the following solution for Tiger Woods dominating golf and keeping other, younger golfers from seeing daylight: that they should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley."

Tilghman has apologized, and Woods' agent says it's no big deal, but when mentioning the use of violence against a golfer, make sure you don't attach the word "lynch" to a situation involving a golfer of African-American ancestry. Like trying to stay awake for any golf event other than the Masters, it's never going to go well.

(P.S. Full disclosure: I can only watch the Masters. I suspect it's the Azaleas, meaning I'm really just watching for the horticulture.)

Plus: this isn't figure skating or college football punting , Ms. Tilghman. It's golf, and no one's getting killed over golf unless we're talking about random lightning strikes on the course. If you really wanted to kill a golfer, do something to hurt them that will really sting, like bankrupting a major mutual fund or kidnapping the awesome David Feherty.

Mike, I sympathize with you. It reminds me of when the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to LA after the 1957 Season.
