Updated throughout the day with quick takes from staff.
This might get confusing so bear with me. On this side, there is Reggie Parent, a white man who spends his Saturday’s rooting for LSU. On the other side is Reggie Drummer, a black man who spends his Saturday’s rooting for Georgia. Parent and Drummer work together in Baton Rouge. Leading up to last weekend’s LSU-Georgia game, the two engaged in what was described as “friendly trash talking” at work. Parent (remember: white guy) told Drummer (black guy) that if Georgia beat his Tigers, there would be a “surprise” waiting for Drummer at work on Monday morning.
And by “surprise,” Parent meant he’d construct just about the most hateful, offensive, racist prop imaginable and leave it for Drummer to find:
When Drummer arrived for work Monday, he says he found a hangman's noose. "I noticed the noose on the ground. I asked him about it. They all laughed at me like it was a joke," Drummer said. Drummer then called police. What is this Public Display of a Noose law, you ask? Well, it was enacted by the state of Louisiana just this past summer to discourage idiots like Parent from these displays of racism and intimidation. The penalty? Up to a $5,000 fine and/or one year in prison. This is the first time anyone has been arrested under the new law. Seems to me this would be a good chance for the courts to make an example out of someone. An East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputy who responded to the call wrote in his report that employees at the business "witnessed the accused making the noose earlier in the morning." The deputy wrote, "The victim stated as an African American man, the noose made a clear statement to him." The report also stated, "Two other African American men working in the same area also expressed offense to the gesture."
The deputy arrested the accused employee, 48-year-old Reggie Parent of Baton Rouge, and charged him with Public Display of a Noose.

Well, that’s just dumb.

I agree that it’s just dumb, but I’d like to make it clear that it’s the law that’s just dumb, not the action.
The action itself is ridiculous, perhaps, but individuals are supposed to be ridiculous from time to time.
But to make a law against a "public display" of a type of knot? That shows that the PC Police are not only out there – they’ve got legislative support.
The heck with that whole First Amendment thing -and, no, I’m not interested int opposing opinions, but I spent my time in uniform insuring that you could have ’em, so go ahead :)

A noose isn’t just a bad name to call some one. It’s not something that the PC police overreact to. It’s a death threat. It’s INCREDIBLY ignorant to call it "just a knot". kinda disturbing actually

Thronedoggie, that is the most ignorant and ridiculous thing I’ve head all day. To trivialize something so blatantly racist and terrible is disturbing to me. The whole, "it’s just a knot" excuse doesn’t even come remotely close to being correct in this situation, when Parent obviously meant for it to symbolize a noose used in the hangings of black men. This has nothing to do with the PC police, and everything to do with a man who has serious issues that need to be addressed in regards to his feelings towards other races. I can’t believe you would even say that displaying a noose to him would be "perhaps" ridiculous. This isn’t a first amendment issue, it’s a threatening action that has attached to it, very vivid images of bigotry and intolerance. I’m sure if the tables were turned you would be singing a different tune. Take your veiled racism and horrible logic some where else.

Thronedoggie,
I think you’re the one that’s ridiculous. Leaving a noose like that is very offensive. I guess it’s safe to say you’d be just as offended if someone left a union soldier’s uniform on your desk. Parent should be happy he wasn’t charged with something worse like making a terroristic threat. (Then again, maybe you skipped over that whole lynching chapter in your history book.)

I will condemn that action just as loudly as the one spoken about in the article. Both are tasteless and wrong. However, this article is about what happened between these two men, you don’t need to derail this thread or guide the debate in another direction to focus on something not directly related to this article. Again, I think what those two men from califronia did was wrong and should be condemened. They are a classic example of brainless and classless. But this discussion is about the obviously racist message that Parent wanted to send to Drummer and how some people on this board don’t seem to find it that wrong. It’s just another thinly veiled defense of what Parent did. It’s like saying, "Because some idiots in California are being discramatory against a Christian white woman, it’s ok for some idiots in Louisianna to be discramtory against a Black man." I don’t really see the connection.

whoops, double post. Anyways, back to work.

The connection is that one is seen as "horrendous," and it was, but the other is seen as an "innocent joke." The question isn’t discrimination, it’s human decency and that’s supposed to apply to everyone.

There’s no question that it’s OFFENSIVE. of COURSE it’s OFFENSIVE.
But it’s really "ridiculous" to think that to OFFEND someone should be against the law. That is pretty much the definition of the concept of "PC police".
THere’s absolutely no indication that the man in question was threatening the other guy’s life. Sure, it was a HORRIBLE joke – but there was no criminal intent, therefore it isn’t a crime.
by thronedoggie on Oct 30, 2008 11:20 AM EDT reply actions
criminal action doesn’t depend on intent. If you are careless while driving and kill somebody, that is a serious crime. You didn’t mean to, but its still a crime. In this case, its the same deal. The action is a crime. Also, what intent did he have? Who taunts a black man with a noose and doesn’t have any criminal intent?

Parent was just a sore loser. He will have a big price to pay for his stupidedly. GO DAWGS!

My apologies. I am in the wrong forum.

I’d have to agree w/ what colecoalition17 said. Intent isn’t always indicative toward being charged w/ a crime. But, like he said, if you are a white man who taunts a black man w/ a noose, unless you are the DUMBEST and MOST IGNORANT PERSON ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, you have racist intentions.

What an idiot. Another racially sensational article making all people from Louisiana look bad. This was one idots/criminal actions, not those of all people from Louisiana or LSU.
IMO, I think you guys should pull it.

Look at it this way if you think it’s rediculous:
Drummer: "Hey reggie, I left a bloody knife on your desk because LSU won. Haha, isn’t it funny? Hey man why are you calling the Police..?"

Lock that racist b*stard up. Too bad there isn’t a big hole that we could fill with people like that, disgusting. I’d probably hate someone too if i looked like that though.
