Throw all the gameplanning out the window. LSU has the perfect formula for beating Florida this Saturday: Break Tim Tebow’s leg. Or his throwing arm. Or perhaps a simple grade three concussion will do. Whatever. So long as it knocks the golden boy out of the game:
"If we get a good shot on [Tebow], we're going to try our best to take him out of the game," [LSU defensive tackle Ricky] Jean-Francois said Monday. "With his size and his heart, it's hard to get a clean shot.”I’d say his mobility -- not that fact that he’s large and possesses the essential organ of life -- is what makes it hard to hit him. But it really matters not at this point, because last night Jean-Francois changed his mind, and decided he doesn’t wanna hurt Tebow:[Jean-Francois] compared a clean hit from his defensive line like "a car wreck without a safety belt."
"We have great respect for Tim as a player and a competitor," part of the statement said. "By taking him out of the game, I meant as a defense we are going to try to make him ineffective. I'm sorry that my initial comments were interpreted another way."Fair enough, Ricky. Although it’s pretty much impossible to interpret your initial statement any other way than completely literally. But your backpedaling abilities are impressive for a big man.
It should also be noted that Jean-Francois is a cousin of Kimbo Slice. This likely means that Tebow will hit him with a glancing blow -- say, drive Florida down to an early field goal -- which will miraculously be enough to knock out Jean-Francois and LSU.
Related: Check out SN’s interview with Tebow. If nothing else, you’ll take away this: Do not ask Tebow who he is voting for. He doesn’t know yet – still waiting for god to tell him which candidate to side with. (“I've thought about it and tried to pray about it and figure out what's the best thing.”)

BATON ROUGE — LSU defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois issued the following clarification to a quote that was attributed to him in today’s online edition of the OrlandoSentinel.com:
“We never go into any football game trying to hurt a player from the
other team. My comments in regard to Florida quarterback Tim Tebow were
misinterpreted and were intended to reflect the style of football that
we play at LSU. We have great respect for Tim as player and a
competitor. By taking him out of the game, I meant, as a defense we are
going to try to make him ineffective. I’m sorry that my initial
comments were interpreted another way.”

Last year the scum fanbase of LSWho? decided to call his cell phone and make death threats. This year a scumbag player for LSWho? has made the threat to take him out of the game. Classy, rednecks, classy. Too bad they’re not playing in Meth Valley this year. Please tell your scumbag fanbase to refrain from throwing any Pabst Blue Ribbon or Milwaukee’s Best beer bottles at the Florida busses after they lose. Just hope that next year you lose to an unranked Arkansas again and the BCS still gives you a spot against an overrated Ohio St. team or an Oklahoma team that loses by 4 touchdowns in in its conference championship game. LSU – a tradition since 2003! :-)

I say LSU should concentrate on Running the ball its what they do best! if they control the clock and run the ball effectively that will lessen Tim Tebows time on the field and wear Floridas Defense down towards the latter stages of the game. I dont think Ricky jean Francios derogatory comment about taking out Tebow will do anything to help LSU’s chances Saturday…. infact it hurts them! It gives Florida Chalkboard Material !! However i do think LSU wins Big 28-13

Tebow himself has said that Jean-Francois’ comments were likely taken out of context.

Florida wins this one easily. This is actually the first decent team LSU will face this year. They are so used to playing cupcakes this year….I dont think they will be able to adjust to playing a real team.

Ferociousjane, please explain to me how this quote can be taken out of context: "If we get a good shot on [Tebow], we’re going to try our best to take him out of the game." It’s pretty straight forward.
by cmottram on Oct 8, 2008 5:06 PM EDT reply actions
Hey DaLawd_De_ DaDeBil – How can you say Florida is a real team considering the opponents they faced have a combined record of 11 wins and 15 losses. Hawaii(2-3), Miami(2-3), Tennessee(2-3), Ole Miss(3-3), and Arkansas(2-3). Seems to me they had a few cupcakes on their schedule too. Load up the box and force TeBow to pass… he is a runningback, not a quarterback. When the tigers make tebow pass they will win in a rout. GEAUX TIGERS!

First of all, I do not have a horse in this race—I ‘m not a fan of either team. I’m just sharing what I read as a direct statement from Tebow.
"(Jean-Francois) wasn’t meaning it like a lot of people took it," Tebow said. "You try to use anything as motivation, too, but I don’t think he really meant everything he said. Part of it’s true. We do have a good training staff.
"I really don’t think he was trying to mean it exactly like he said."

LSU doesn’t need to take Tebow out of the game. He can just keep on running up the middle for 1-2 yards. Mullen doesn’t seem to be able to come up with the plays to allow for downfield passing. 1-5 yard passes to Harvin is all that’s allowed.
The worst thing LSU could do is take Tebow out of the game because that might open up the possibility for Brantley, who is a much better passer, to come in.

You’re the expert writer, Mottram, but shouldn’t that be back-pedalling? As in back-pedalling your bike away from something dangerous? I suppose he could be peddling something back to whomever he sold it to or bought it from, which makes good sense at the flea market but not so much in this case.

Thanks for the catch, guardian. My editor just lost out on his Christmas card from me this year …
by cmottram on Oct 8, 2008 8:03 PM EDT reply actions
It is interesting to note that defensive lineman Mr. Jean-Francois, at 289 lbs., outweighs Tebow by only about 40 pounds (if that). In other words, even with a full head of back-pedalling steam, it might be an all-night job for him to take Tebow out while being bumped about like a rhino chasing by Land Cruisers.
Ferocious Jane is right. She, you, and I realize hyperbole when we face it.

Tebow’s been hit before and I doubt this bag o’ wind is scaring him with this childish nonsense. Maybe it will be good bulletin board material for the Gator O line.
Just how big is the foot Ricky is trying to remove from his mouth?
What has LSU done this season to be spewing such hubris?
The only team worth discussing that LSU has played this year is Auburn and they’re going to lose their top 25 ranking shortly. They’re just not that good. Like WVU and Clemson, they are just another over-rated Southern team. The voters will figure it out shortly.
I see the line on the game is Florida by 6.5?
Maybe they know something Ricky doesn’t?

i don’t care about the comments by jean-francois, enough has been said about them. but looking at this game, i don’t see a recipe for a florida victory. no moody, harvin can’t handle rb duties, tebow (maybe because of the coaching staff’s concerns) hasn’t run NEARLY as much as last year, and chris rainey is a true freshman (and at 5’9, 185 he doesn’t have the size to go up the middle). i don’t think they can run effectively on LSU. i’m sure harvin will catch a few passes and break some gains but they don’t figure to have much else. Lsu should be able to run, they are right there with alabama as the best rushing team in the conference, and florida has not been strong against the run. if that forces florida to stack the box, play action to the receivers will be there. its always tough as hell for lsu against florida, but they really look like the better team to me, and i think it should end up about 31-20.

Hey there Mr jft2020….just to fill you in it’s LS-who as you put it…its LSU with 2 NC since 03, it’s LS…who….that would be an LSU…which beat florida 3 of the last 4 years….so while I know youre pretty stupid…even you know the name LSU!!
Oh by the way"HAVE A GREAT DAY!!"

All this coming from a guy who has 1 sack this year against some pathetic teams.
As a matter of fact I remember the last time someone said that. In fact his stat line was similar to that of little ricky. his name was Geno hayes he ended the game with one tackle. tebow went off and posted ridiculous numbers.
So I say,"Thank you little ricky, your motivation will be grateful by the time the clocks hit zero. Tebow will have another sick day, and you can go back to all your teamates with your amazing one sack of the year and start kissing some behind! You just woke up some sleepy gators and they needed it!’
With love from the entire Gator nation!
PS-Tebow doesn’t come out of games. He is the man of steel. The kid played in high school with a broken leg!

Wouldn’t be surprised to see that the Gators show up with a new 370 lb tallback, run some stuff at Ricky, just to see who wants to stay in the game.

Hey phillygator… Too bad one of the mighty Ole Miss Rebels didn’t say something like that to fire up Tebow and the girls before coming into the Swamp and taking it to your butts. Honestly, dude… If your team is so lousy that you have to have motivation to get fired up for this game, they might as well just turn in their uniforms. And to brag about beating Geno Hayes and the mighty FSU Cinammonroles last year is pathetic. Enjoy watching your lizards losing their 2nd in a row in the Swamp. LSU 34, UF 10 – Francois knocks Tebow out in the first round.

Taking a player out of the game is a phrase often used to describe removing that element of said player from the equation. Taking Tim Tebow out of the game would mean that you either make it so he doesn’t want to run anymore or that he doesn’t have time to sit and pick apart your defense.
The homer blogger that broke the story mis-represented Jean-Francois, ESPN picked up and ran with it and now hacks like one Chris Mottram are having a field day with it. Enjoy it, it won’t change the outcome of the game one modicum. LSU wins a close one, 31-28.

The original quote was not smart regardless of the intent, and I’m sure Ricky heard about it from the coaching staff. The "correction" sounded canned, like a PR guy wrote it.
Regarding the game, I can’t get a handle on how good LSU is this season yet (and I’ve watched every down). Should be fun to watch.
by tigersnot on Oct 9, 2008 6:28 PM EDT reply actions
TA May, since you’re clearly a genius, explain to me how this quote — "If we get a good shot on [Tebow], we’re going to try our best to take him out of the game." — can possibly mean anything other than physically knocking him out of the game? "A good shot." What do you think that refers to?
And I have no interest whatsoever in the outcome of this game. In fact, I hope LSU wins just to piss off the Gator fans I have to work with …
by cmottram on Oct 9, 2008 7:15 PM EDT reply actions
I already explained it to you. To make him ineffective. Isn’t that what every defensive player is looking to do?
by T A May on Oct 9, 2008 7:24 PM EDT reply actions
OK, if you really think that taking a "good shot" on someone doesn’t literally mean knock them out of them game, then I guess I simply cannot argue with you.
by cmottram on Oct 9, 2008 7:48 PM EDT reply actions
I can definitely agree to disagree. And I understand the fuss, I really do. I guess the biggest problem I have with the whole ordeal is that it’s being presented as fact that an injury is his intention. "He said this, this is what he meant." Hell, even Tebow has gone on record as saying he doesn’t think he meant anything malicious.
by T A May on Oct 9, 2008 8:29 PM EDT reply actions
Not a bad comment it is what defence line should strive to do, put the biggest hit on the quaterback they can. This isn’t no touch football and with Tim Teabow being one of only the two weapons on this offence everybody knew that this is the gameplan for every defence florida plays.
