Rangers Fans: Apparently, Not Big on Will, Grace

By Spencer Hall

Larry Goodman, section 407 season ticket holder, may be better known to you as "Dancin' Larry," the fan who goes into entire, well-planned dance routines at New York Rangers games to pump up the crowd.

The fans love it so much, they call him a homosexual slur! Warning: This clip contains a mild homosexual slur chanted by Rangers fans. It also includes a strong bit of choreography by Larry, whose sexiness may be NSFW. They're both essential parts of the story.

Gay Rangers fans have had enough, accusing MSG of allowing a toxic environment to bloom in the arena. Being a privately held arena, free speech rules do not apply, meaning MSG may do or not do anything they please in this case. Management attributes the chants to "the offensive behavior of a very small minority of game attendees," and says the chanting is a very minor problem in an otherwise passionate but well-managed environment.

This seems less like outright predjudice than just another chapter in a tradition of intentionally callous meathead New York/Long Island humor. This is the same cultural hotbed that begat Howard Stern and the Jerky Boyz and will, when out of all other ammo, resort to calling someone "gay" like there's something wrong with it, even here in 2008 in a post-Queer Eye For The Straight Guy world. (We ask: After seeing Carson Kressley on television, can even really gay people be considered gay until Carson Kressley says they're gay?)

But enough about what's right, wrong, or semi-excusable: Dancin' Larry has his own frickin' MySpace page, and it loads Alice in Chains automatically when you frickin' open it.

Frickin' awesome, bay-BEE!
