Jim Ryan, SN’s resident expert on country club sports, will be covering the Wachovia Championship in Charlotte, N.C., this week. Next week, he may or may not be covering lawn bowling.
Boo Weekley is my new favorite golfer.
I think he won me over Wednesday during his pre-tournament press conference. Boo strolled in wearing a camouflage hat that I don’t believe Tiger Woods has in his closet. He kicked things off by telling reporters -- in a thick Southern drawl -- that he “went and drove them NASCARs” at Lowe’s Motor Speedway that morning. When asked what’s the fastest he ever had driven a regular car on the open road, the Floridian replied matter-of-factly, “I’d say close to about 130, 140. I did it on the interstate over there.”
Jon Show has written for SN that Weekley could be compared to “John Daly without the baggage.” Weekley took a page out of the Daly playbook Friday when he attempted to drive the par-four, 345-yard 14th -- and hit the ball into a lake on the left side of the hole. No matter; Weekley dropped, chipped to within about 10 feet of the pin and made par.
Weekley’s playing partner, the squeaky clean Zack Johnson, made the same score by hitting iron off the tee, iron onto the green and two-putting. To borrow a phrase from the crokied masses watching the Wachovia, that’s boring, brah.
On the par-five 15th, Weekley blasted his drive and attempted to reach the green in two, only to hit a long iron into a bunker guarding the green. Boo’s bunker shot landed about 10 feet from the pin again, and he drained that putt for birdie, bringing a chorus of “Booooooo” from the gallery. Johnson, meanwhile, laid up on his second shot, reached the green in three, and two-putted for par.
Johnson needs to learn that intelligent, conservative play like that will only win him boring green jackets. Johnson might have won the Masters, but Boo has won the Verizon Heritage two years in a row, giving him two of those awesome, red tartan plaid jackets you see pictured.
“We’re working on getting like Davis Love,” Boo said of the jackets. “If you get about five of them, you could make one hell of a curtain or a tablecloth.”
Us Boo fans can only hope he achieves that dream soon.
