Shanoff's Wake-Up Call: Bulls Should Go Rose

↵Today's Calls: Michael Beasley vs. Derrick Rose, NBA East vs. NBA West, A-Rod vs. Kevin Kouzmanoff, Justin Masterson vs. Jon Lester, Matt Ryan vs. Michael Vick, David Cook vs. David Archuleta and More! ↵

↵

↵The Opening Pitch: Tankers never prosper. Mostly. That's the lesson of last night's NBA draft lottery, where the "1.7-percent-chance" Bulls pulled the No. 1 overall pick, and the Heat -- the worst team of the season -- was relegated to No. 2. ↵

↵

↵It lines up rather neatly: The Bulls will take either local prep hero Derrick Rose or versatile frontcourt monster Michael Beasley. They really can't go wrong, though I expect the process to be tortured. ↵

↵

↵Despite most conventional wisdom saying Beasley, I think they will ultimately take Rose, leaving Beasley to head to Miami to team up with Dwyane Wade and Shawn Marion to form a new "Big Three" in the East. ↵

↵

↵The lottery loser was Minnesota: The 3-pick is lofty, but with a glaring need up front, it looks like they are the chumps who will have to take Stanford C Brook Lopez, destined for NBA mediocrity. ↵

↵

↵Heading down the list: (4) Seattle can get a PG to play with Kevin Durant (Jerryd Bayless?); (5) Memphis can find a replacement for Pau Gasol (Kevin Love?) ... ↵

↵

↵As for the Knicks? At No. 6, they can either draft star power (OJ Mayo); reach for a PG to run Mike D'Antoni's system (DJ Augustin); or go for the relatively unknown Italian swingman (Danilo Gallinari?). ↵

↵

↵NBA Draft season has officially begun, and Mike DeCourcy has a must-read mock draft. (He agrees with me that the Bulls should take Rose.) ↵

↵

↵NBA East Finals: Surprise, surprise -- the Celtics won at home! At this point, the East Finals are utterly predictable. Call me when someone loses at home; otherwise, roust me for Game 7. ↵

↵

↵Tonight: Spurs at Lakers. It feels like the Lakers have been off forever; the Spurs are coming off one of their biggest wins in franchise history. Feels like SA could steal one tonight in Game 1, instantly making it more interesting than the snoozer in the East. ↵

↵

↵Meanwhile, Carmelo to the Nets? It would take the Nets out of the LeBron Sweepstakes in 2010, but it would give them a super-duper-star in an East where that actually can mean something. (Red flag: Why would the Nuggets give up on their franchise player?) Now, if the Nets can just find a sucker willing to take Vince Carter. ... ↵

↵

↵MLB Instant History: So much for an "A-Rod bump." He came back yesterday, ever delivering one of his patented game-already-out-of-reach HRs. But the Yankees were blown out by the Orioles at the Stadium 12-2, continuing their recent tailspin. The Yankees are awful. ↵

↵

↵More MLB: Padres are Jekyll and Hyde. One minute, Kevin Towers is ripping them; the next, Kevin Kouzmanoff is ripping a game-clinching 3-run HR. ... Fantasy Stud? Cole Hamels, who racked up 11 Ks in an ND (but Phillies W). ... Good grief, ANOTHER young pitching phenom for the Red Sox? (Only briefly: Justin Masterson was sent back to AAA to make room for Bartolo Colon, who starts today). ... Yes, that was the division-leading Marlins out-pitching the best-in-NL D'backs last night (Mark Hendrickson joins 6-win Club). ... Amazingly, Doug Davis will be back in the D'backs rotation on Friday; after Jon Lester's no-hitter on Monday, it is an inspiring week from players who have battled cancer. ... Wow, Ryan Church took a serious knee to the head. ↵

↵

↵Mike Piazza retires: The 1988 62nd-round draft pick became one of the greatest power-hitting catchers of all time (427 HR), a sure-fire Hall of Famer with 12 All-Star appearances in 16 years. But will he go in the Hall as a Dodger or a Met? ↵

↵

↵NFL owners opt out of CBA: I have no problems saying that I hope both greedy sides get what they deserve -- and that would be one more season of Hot! Replacement! Action! ↵

↵

↵(I also look forward to that season without a salary cap, when Jerry Jones decides to backstab his fellow owners and blow out his spending to try to win a title.) ↵

↵

↵Falcons sign QB Matt Ryan, including $35M in guaranteed money. The 6Y/$72M deal isn't quite the $130M deal that the team gave Michael Vick; then again, presumably Ryan isn't running a dog-fighting ring on the side. So you can understand the discount. Kudos to both Ryan and the Falcons for avoiding a holdout. ↵

↵

↵Must-See Video: Barkley on gambling. Watch this video and decide for yourself whether Charles Barkley has a handle on the extent of his gambling problem or if he is in massive denial, destined to be unable to sustain any sort of "taking a year off" pledge from gambling. ↵

↵

↵NHL Awards Season: Alex Ovechkin wins SN's Player of the Year award, and you'll get no disagreement from me. Here is the full list of awardees. ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: "American Idol" and sports don't mix, nor should they. Last night's finale crammed a boxing metaphor throughout the show, and it was tortured, to say the least. ↵

↵

↵Meanwhile, it looks like my guy David Cook will not be able to topple the Archuleta machine. Yet it is some condolence to know that Cook will have the far more memorable career as a pop star. ↵

↵

↵(In more sports-meets-entertainment, Kristi Yamaguchi beat Jason Taylor in the "Dancing with the Stars" finale, but the dynastic winning streak by former athletes continues.) ↵
