Hey, Something Funny From The Duke Lax Case

Let’s take a trip back to the summer of ’06, when the three biggest news stories were Pluto being shunned as a planet, The Crocodile Hunter being murdered by a sting ray and, of course, the Duke lacrosse sex scandal.

I’ll spare you all the details of the case, but it went a little something like this: Stripper Crystal Mangum (right) accuses Duke lax players of raping her, which turned out to be a horrible lie resulting in the Duke students’ lives being ruined (at least, temporarily). But whatever happened to Ms. Mangum, you’ve surely never wondered? Well, I’ll tell you: She graduated from North Carolina Central University last week.

Now, normally I wouldn’t care enough to bring this detail to your attention, but there is some incredibly sweet irony in this story that we can’t even attempt to make up: She earned her degree in “police psychology.” Man, that’s rich.

This was in the last sentence of a much larger column in the Duke student paper, which mostly serves to rip Mangum – and NCCU -- to shreds. And while I don’t necessarily disagree with most of the column, this lead will do little to improve Duke’s image of self-righteousness:

It seems anyone can get a college degree these days-especially if they go to North Carolina Central University.
Yes, anyone can get a college degree, but no one can judge others quite like Dookies.

NCCU, by the way, is a historically black college, which only adds to the racial undertones of the case and Duke’s self-righteousness…
