Shanoff's Wake-Up Call: Home Mojo Fails C's

Today's Calls: Celtics vs. Home, MLB vs. Instant Replay, White Sox vs. Dice-K, Josh Hamilton vs. Ken Griffey, Andrew Miller vs. David Price, O.J. Mayo vs. NBA Agents, Lyla Garrity vs. Tyra Collette and More. ↵

↵The Opening Pitch: Call it "Home Court Disadvantage." The Celtics' over-reliance on home cooking finally caught up with them. ↵

↵

↵And now, after merely two games of the East finals, the Celtics are in a ton of trouble thanks to that pesky postseason statistic: "Oh-for-Road." ↵

↵

↵Can Boston win one of three games in Detroit? Let's see: The Celtics couldn't win one of three in Cleveland; heck, they couldn't even win one of three in Atlanta. ↵

↵

↵And that presumes the C's would win both of the remaining games in Boston -- against these Pistons, the Celtics have already shown that home-court advantage isn't the lock that it was in the first and second rounds. ↵

↵

↵If the Celtics had won even a single road game during these playoffs the thinking would be different; instead, they became the first team in more than 30 years to make a conference finals without winning on the road. That kind of history-making has a way of coming back to bite you in the rear. ↵

↵

↵I'm not saying the Celtics are finished, but if history -- both from the Celtics' 2008 playoff run and NBA history at large -- is any guide, it sure looks that way. ↵

↵

↵Inside the Box Score: KG: 24, Pierce: 26, Allen: 25. Here's what should scare Celtics fans most: They got their best playoff performance yet from the "Big Three." But if the Big Three are doing what they were brought together to do and the Celtics STILL lose, what does THAT say? ↵

↵

↵ ↵

↵

↵MLB to explore instant replay: Finally! The league's historical resistance has been totally unreasonable. ↵

↵

↵(Psst: Getting the calls right is at the heart of the "integrity of the game," as opposed to "making sure we don't hurt the umps' feelings.") ↵

↵

↵The replay concept under consideration (approved by the GMs last winter) is entirely reasonable. ↵

↵

↵Use replay to review home runs -- fair/foul, fence-clearing, fan interference. Call it "Rule 3F" and let's get on with things. ↵

↵

↵MLB Instant History: Eight is a magic number. Streaking White Sox win 8th in a row, behind late rally. ... Dice-K runs record to 8-0. ... Meanwhile: I don't think the Mets brought Johan Santana in to lose to another ace like seven-win Tim Hudson. ... More heroics from Josh Hamilton (GW HR in 10th). ... You know Seattle is bad when it is being swept by Detroit. ... Fantasy Stud: Andrew Miller (7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 9 K, 1 BB), to complete the feisty Marlins' sweep of the D-backs. ... Milestone Watch: Ken Griffey hits HR No. 598. ... Prospect Watch: David Price. Tracking. ... If the Yankees win close and late every time Joe Girardi is ejected, do they even need him? ↵

↵

↵O.J. Mayo Scandal: Mayo was dropped by his agent at Bill Duffy Associates, and the question is: How quickly will another agent pick him up? Given the sketchiness of the industry, the over-under is five seconds. ↵

↵

↵I don't mind that the NCAA charges $6 to apply for their Final Four ticket "lottery." But I have always found it offensive that it doesn't refund the "handling" charge, and I'm glad someone's finally sued over it. (h/t: USA Today) ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: Derek Jeter dating ... Lyla Garrity? Yes, it's only a rumor, but no fling would earn Jeter more cred among sports fans, many of whom are devoted to Friday Night Lights and have had a crush on Lyla for two seasons. (Like Betty vs. Veronica, you're either a Lyla fan or a Tyra fan, and I'm a Tyra fan.) ↵
