Owner Doesn't Know Why Fans Hate Boston, Or Where Atlanta, Cleveland Are Located

In todays Worcester Telegram & Gazette, there's some nondescript blather from some the Celtics owner about how other owners love what he's done. Here's the part I thought worth discussing:
The game presentations in Atlanta and Cleveland poked fun at the city of Boston on their giant video screens earlier in the playoffs. The Celtics don't stoop that low.

"Why would we need to poke fun at Atlanta and Cleveland?" [Wyc] Grousbeck asked. "That's just piling on. We couldn't find them on a map."
To me, this is the absolute perfect time to make this point: Unless you're dealing with Kobe or the Spurs, usually, hatred of a city has nothing to do with the team itself and everything to do with perception of fans. Or with the larger sense of the city; in itself, Boston isn't such a terrible place. But the sports culture there drives people insane. Look, players are players. They all love each other. And then, most of what outsiders know of a city is its televised fans. Like I'm sure plenty of people think Utah is hell on earth after watching the Jazz's home game.

So Wyc, sorry teams are dumping on Boston. It's not about who's on the map or not (seriously? you can't find Atlanta?), but how your fans are perceived. And in that, almost no one's got as much working against them as those, umm, complicated Beantown fans.

“But the sports culture there drives people insane.”

Care to elaborate on that? Is it, like, the winning and stuff?

Oh, I know. The “yankees suck” chant and Spygate, right? I’m tired of both, myself.

Thanks to a decade that’s been very kind to Boston Sports, the teams get on TV a lot. The percentage of idiots that call the area home is probably no different than in any other area- based on population. The percentage of idiots that can afford to go to a playoff game around here I would bet is very slim, but you wouldn’t know that- based on the guy holding the TV camera.

Congratulations on your apparent mastery of eastern United States geography. Hopefully sentence structure and proper pronoun usage are next. You should spend some time here. In addition to a sports culture that drives people insane, there is also a plethera of fine learning institutions. :)

Larsen, you are an idiot. I would just like to mention that the kind of self-importance shown by Grousbeck is a nice example of the attitude of a lot of Boston (and New York for that matter) fans. It doesn’t come off well.

shoals it’s a cliche, a saying; the meaning of the phrase is not rooted in the literal. to feign a lack of understanding here is disingenuous.

i’m actually quite confident wyc grousbeck can find both cleveland & atlanta on a map.

yet another example of your personal view of the celtics and boston sports fans in general informing (incorrectly) your interpretation of individual quotes or scenarios…you’re better than that (but not lately).

Radja, I know he knows where it is. That doesn’t make it any less of a silly thing to say. These are, after all, major American cities.

And I don’t for the life of me understand why fanbases have so much trouble accepting and embracing the HATE ME NOW role. It’s a compliment.
