Don Imus Has Really Been Working on That Racial Sensitivity Thing

Disc jockey and man of questionable character Don Imus may still be on a mission to prove his racial ignorance. You’ll recall he lost his job last year after referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy headed hos.” Well, today, while discussing Pacman Adam Jones, Imus was back at it:
During the show, conversation turned to a story about how suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones now wants to drop his well-known nickname. In the course of the segment, Imus is told that Jones has “been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”

Imus asks: “What color is he?”

“He’s African-American,” the host is informed by one of his on-air sidekicks.

“Well, there you go,” Imus said. “Now we know.”

The actual audio is after the jump, if you’d like to hear it for yourself.

This is a non story.

by cmottram on Jun 23, 2008 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

it was clearly imus pushing the envelope again with regards to race, i agree with mottram. why bother asking if it wasn’t? and after his previous track record, imus should know everything he says would be scrutinized to the highest level, and it should be. unless he is either a) stupid or b) has a career death wish, why even go anywhere near the topic?

Are we more tired about hearing from Don Imus or about Pacman Jones?

It’s obvious that there is some anymosity with Imus and those of African American desent. Unfortunately, he didn’t use any derogitory terms, so although everyone will make a huge deal of this alledged bigotry he’ll probably get away with this with the freedom of speech act as protection. Hopefully , he just realize that he’s not funny and quit making stupid statements like these.

Imus doesn’t bother me…I heard his remarks and good and bad. But what bothers me are the so-called respected journalists who appears on his show, Brokaw, writers from Newsweek, the late Tim Russert, Harold Ford Jr and so on. If most people agree that this man is tasteless and vulgar why do these so-called journalist appears on his program at least once a week? I’m not knocking Imus, that his gig and I can live with that.

Go visit this man of ‘questionable character’ at his ranch for kids with cancer; he’s broadcasting from there now.

As for Harold Ford, Jr., talk about ‘questionable character’…Imus made him a national figure; in his hour of need, Ford showed what a coward he is by bailing….With friends like that, ya know….

Keep on keeping on, Mr. Imus!!!!

Chris Henry, Tank Johnson, Adam Jones, T.O., Randy Moss, Michael Vick, Chad Johnson, Odell Thurman, Ricky Williams…just a sampling of players who have caused the NFL headaches legally or otherwise in the past couple of years. None of them are white. Imus is a jerk, but if his intent is to say that there is a problem with the black NFL athlete and their ability to handle their role, he’s right.

by mmcdan13 on Jun 23, 2008 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

I used to listen to Imus a lot and gained a sense about him that he was smart and got to the essence of issues with irreverent but intelligent insight. He had numerous bigwigs who obviously saw the same qualities in him. He had regular guests on his show from the who’s who list. This recent penchant for saying clearly ignorant and shallow things just doesn’t jibe with the Imus I got used to. I guess his credibility has now left the building.

mmcdan13: you’re an ignorant fool. I’m embarrassed to have your comment at the bottom of something I wrote. This not a black vs. white issue. Every player who gets in trouble has a different set of circumstances that should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Saying someone gets in trouble because they are black is just blatant racism. Furthermore, making a blanket statement such as “the black NFL athlete” doesn’t know how to handle his role is just wrong. Sure, a handful of black athletes have had troubles, but the overwhelming majority of black players have never had any issues whatsoever.

the first step is admitting the problem.

i see imus as a civil leader, like martin luther king. he’s trying to make us all equal and part of that means committing crimes on an equal basis.

listen to imus and stop committing so much crime.

Among men, blacks (28.5%) are about six times more likely than whites (4.4%)
to be admitted to prison during their life. Among women, 3.6% of blacks and
0.5% of whites will enter prison at least once. (U.S. Department of Justice)
Based on current rates of incarceration, an estimated 7.9% of black males
compared to 0.7% of white males will enter State of Federal prison by the
time they are age 20 and 21.4% of black males versus 1.4% of white males will
be incarcerated by age 30. (U.S. Department of Justice)
Some have noted that more black men are in prison in America than are in
college. (The Black and White of Justice, Freedom Magazine, Volume 128)

by sorum84 on Jun 23, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

mottram,
it’s not racial insensitivity if it’s true.

you should stop enabling a large portion of the population to commit crimes just because of race.

by sorum84 on Jun 23, 2008 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

Mr. Mottram, with all due respect, I’m not sure it’s mmcdan13 who is the ignorant one. Clearly, there is a problem not only in the NFL, but in society as a whole. Approximately 41 percent of the adult correctional population were black in 2006. One in every nine black men between the ages of 25 and 29 were incarcerated in 2006. You can argue whether that means young black males are more likely to commit crimes or that they are unfairly persecuted. But simply pointing out the fact that there is a problem is not ignorance. What is ignorant is to ignore the problem.

That being said, Don Imus is a jackass.

Imus sees the sports headlines flash across his computer screen this morning just like everyone else and sees these headlines from the NFL: Jevon Kearse (drunk driving), Marshawn Lynch (hit and run), Ahmad Bradshaw (probation violation), Dwayne Jarett (DWI), Mike Anderson (suspended for the year). Maybe he should base his comments on fact next time.

by mivanitch on Jun 24, 2008 12:41 AM EDT reply actions

You can use statistics all day long, but you cant say a person’s color determines why they were arrested six times. Anyone looking at the issues would question the person’s judgement, not their color.

Imus came back on air on thin ice and just brought enough heat on himself to sink through. Pacman is a fool with bad judgement, but to try and take a swipe al ALL BLACK PEOPLE because of some statistics in a book or use Pacman as an example of your everyday Black person is just crap.

What Imus said was bigoted. His statements clearly and specifically addressed Pacman’s race, not Pac…er…Adam Jones’ judgement. THAT is where Imus went wrong (again). If he called Pacman a fool, we wouldn’t have this conversation.

by GhostintheMachine on Jun 24, 2008 12:52 AM EDT reply actions

GordonGekko — You’re certainly right about the part of this discussion that points out that black males are disproportionately imprisoned in the United States. For anyone to think that’s what Imus was trying to say would be giving someone with his track record a little too much credit. And to the point someone made about a cancer ranch, approximately how much do I have to spend on charity to be given license to use slurs against people of other races, orientations, etc.? Is there a certain buy-in?

First of all I don’t want anyone to think that I am coming to the rescue of either, Pac-Man jones or Don Imus. To tell you the truth we probably would be better off without either one of them in the news. However one of them has allready proved through his antics off the the field that he is a complete idiot and the other is so obtuse to believe we think that he"s not prejudice on his actions and his beliefs. Look I really don’t care what Don Imus says I think we all know that he is a complete idiot, but I am sick and tired of people prolonging the belief that the reason we have crime in the United States is because of the african american culture. The reason we have crime in this country is because it has taken so long for us as Americans to realize the real reason is because some of as adults have put the chore of raising our children of the future on things like T.V. and the public schooling system, not to mention the fact that it has taken so many years for us as a country to realize that we all are considerd equal and that crime is a unified thing that certain people committ because of who they are and not what color they where born. When it comes right down to it, whatever audience Don Imus is reaching out there on the public airwaves. Needs to take a step back and as they put there child in front of the T.V. to watch the next episode of seasame street grab a seat right along side them and maybe they can both learn something together even if it’s 30 years to late.

Wait a sec, please explain to me how this ISN’T a “racial incident”? What was the point of asking what race Adam Jones is?

So Chris and Chris- you’re both so confident you knew exactly what Imus was thinking when he asked what color Pacman was?

You’d both make terrible reporters. The difference between a reporter and a blogger: reporters write unbisased articles based on fact. Bloggers just like to repeat a snippet of an event and twist it into a biased opion. It turns out, most sports writers are just irresponsible bloggers….and funny how you both work for TSN.

If you people want to crucify Don Imus for asking what color Pacam Man Jones is, save it…and go pester rappers who spit out more racial crap on one album than Imus does in an entire career. Yeah— the NAACP doesn’t say a peep about how rappers treat women, but Dom Imus— oh..yeah— let’s go after him for one or two comments.

The only people this comment causes a stir for is hypocrites who want to hang on every word a white publlic figure says just to try and discredit them.

by Giuliani For President on Jun 24, 2008 8:59 AM EDT reply actions

Hold up, lumping TO & Chad Johnson in with players like Tank Johnson, Ricky Williams, Odell Thurman and Pac…err Adam Jones is wrong. Just because a player is outspoken and mouthy does NOT make him a criminal.
What Imus said is just a reflection of what many old white men (which Imus is) think, a black man with money is a portent of trouble and a criminal.
And there have been plenty of white athletes that have gotten DUI’s and the like, the pub just never seems to be as heavy.

by blackbandit20 on Jun 24, 2008 9:03 AM EDT reply actions

Judging by certain reactions here on this topic, it would seem that there are still people who cannot step over a curb that’s half of an inch high. I truly believe that Imus’ remarks were intended to be tongue in cheek, but with the reaction from his previous comments, he will be under the microscope with amazing scrutiny. I am not defending his words, but one has to go through the years of him being on the air and have to wonder— what other statements has he made that have gone unnoticed? I don’t listen to him, so I don’t even know what his voice sounds like, let alone know anything about him. Pacman, on the other hand is a small grouping of what is negative about the NFL. Period. There are a handful of these characters in a league that has perhaps 2,000 pros? Correct my number if it’s incorrect, but it seems that there are many pro football players flying under the radar with their good behavior.
Lastly, I am a firm believer in free speech. It needs to be in place. If Imus wants to spill filth on the airwaves to listeners who find him interesting— he has the right— until sponsors and those who finance his show deem that it may be unwise to link their products to him. In other words, you many not believe in what some one says, but I will not stand in the way to censor them. I would rather have it out in the open so we as thinking beings can discuss, disect, and debate the issue. Then we all might learn something, and be enlightened.

Imus has a right to be a moron. I believe he does hate black people. But Louis Farakkahn and Obama’s pastor, Reverend Wright, hates white people, and they are not punished for spreading "hate.’ Hate is "OK" as long as black people are the one’s "hating," I guess.

When Obama is elected, you will be arrested for having bad thoughts, and the Obama Brown Shirts will know when you’re thinking them, and put you in a labor camp for years.

What have we done with this country called "America" that the WWII generation made for us?(answer: we, the Baby Boomers, have destroyed it. America won’t have to worry about "illegal immigrants" in another generation, because nobody is going to want to come here anyway).

myeagles, enlighten us on all the white athletes crimes. Tell us of all of the white athletes shooting people, or killing them by running over them after beeping your horn, rather than braking. Tell us about all the white athletes that pulled guns on their teammates in the locker room. Tell us about all the white athletes that were arrested for drug trafficking. I really want to know all these stories. I especially want to hear about all the white athletes that hosted dog fighting rings at their homes.

Don Imus is useless. Always has been. He is also a victim of our racist society that is constantly looking for high profile white men to tear down. I hate Imus, always have, but he has the same rights as the so called Reverend Wright, or Farakhan. Grow up and get the chip off your shoulder.
