Bang! There's your first big off-season tremor: Flip's out in Detroit. This after the team supposedly told Saunders that everything was cool.
The knock on Saunders has nothing to do with his Xs and Os work ... The problem is simply that this team is difficult to motivate. There are times when they simply don't execute like they need to, and in recent years, those lapses have occurred at the worst possible times. Like, say, the fourth quarter in an Conference Final elimination game.Okay, maybe Flip isn't a supreme tactician. But, as with Skiles in Chicago, the point here is that that particular coach's voice just stopped registering. On a veteran team, where the guys more or less know what to do, that's the main function of the guy with the clipboard. And Flip, while he had a good run, simply can't jumpstart this notoriously flighty team.
