Shanoff's Wake-Up Call: Favre, MLB Stars, More

↵Today's Calls: Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers, Rays vs. Mets, CC Sabathia vs. Rich Harden, Chase Utley vs. Josh Hamilton, O.J. Mayo vs. Eric Gordon and More. ↵

↵

↵The Opening Pitch: There is only one option for the Packers. ↵

↵

↵They must absolutely embrace Brett Favre's return to the NFL. And absolutely can NOT let him play for another team. This is a no-brainer, if only because any other option is no-win for the Packers: ↵

↵

↵What, like they should let the most popular player in franchise history play for another team? Like they should trade Mr. Packer for, what, a third-round pick? Is a third-rounder worth that epic grief from fans? ↵

↵

↵No, the obvious course of action is to welcome him back openly, then decisively put him on the bench behind Aaron Rodgers. ↵

↵

↵Position Favre as the only guy who could possibly tutor the Packers' new starting QB. Let Favre tarnish his own legend by demanding a trade. But do absolutely nothing to accommodate it. ↵

↵

↵There is another factor in play: What's the chance Rodgers can make it through the season uninjured? 75? 50? ↵

↵

↵More likely than not, the Packers will find the need to use a backup QB; who better to call off the bench to play the savior than ol' No. 4? ↵

↵

↵The only doomsday scenario for the team is to see him playing in another jersey. It's so easy and so obvious: Keep him on the Packers. ↵

↵

↵ ↵

↵

↵Sports Media: Billy Packer is reportedly out at CBS, replaced by Clark Kellogg as the network's lead college hoops analyst. Woo-hoo! ↵

↵

↵Packer wasn't just a curmudgeon; he was joyless, which made listening to him excruciating. His ouster is a great day for college hoops fans. ↵

↵

↵MLB Instant History: Just in time for the All-Star Break, the Rays are falling apart. After their scintillating sweep of the Red Sox at the Trop, the Rays enter the break on a seven-game losing streak, finally (and symbolically) giving up the lead in the AL East to the Red Sox on Sunday. ↵

↵

↵With the three-day break to think about it, the question isn't whether the Rays will realize how high they have been flying and come back to Earth, but whether they will bounce back. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt: You don't reach 55 wins at the All-Star Break by accident. ↵

↵

↵Meanwhile, the Mets couldn't be hotter: Nine straight wins and only 1/2 GB the NL East lead. What a turnaround. Have to believe the team kind of doesn't want to see this three-day break to interrupt their run. ↵

↵

↵Snub me for your All-Star Game, will you?!: Jermaine Dye goes 4-for-5 with a HR (21st) and 3 RBIs in Chicago's wild 12-11 loss to the Rangers. ↵

↵

↵That's now 2-0 for CC Sabathia with the Brewers, after a CG W dramatically earned on a walkoff sac fly, plus a HR for Sabathia. ↵

↵

↵Symbolic of his injury-plagued career, Kerry Wood won't play in the All-Star Game (the Cubs get an eighth All-Star, with Carlos Marmol replacing Wood). ↵

↵

↵Fantasy Watch: Chad Billingsley, who had 13 Ks in a 7 IP/5 H/1 ER outing. ↵

↵

↵Saturday's best: Rich Harden's Chicago debut went about as well as could be hoped for by Cubs fans: 5 1/3 IP, 10 Ks. ↵

↵

↵Last-day before the All-Star Break milestones: 11 Ws for Tim Lincecum; 10 Ws for Dice-K; 21 HR for Ryan Ludwick; 23 HR for Pat Burrell; 25-game hit streak for Ian Kinsler. ↵

↵

↵All-Star Futures Game: Your future, like your present, belongs to the Red Sox. Prospect Che-Hsuan Lin led the "World" team with a 2-run HR in a 3-0 shutout of the "U.S." stars. ↵

↵

↵Home Run Derby Mania: Josh Hamilton was/is my pick to win, based on nothing more than his comeback story. One blogger makes a far more analytical case for Chase Utley. ↵

↵

↵My Derby rooting interest is Ryan Braun, my favorite active baseball player. Braun will be pitched to by his agent, which sort of scares me. Far more problematic: Braun hits righty in a park that favors lefty power. ↵

↵

↵Justin Morneau was added to the field to round it out at 8. Now: Is there a way to set my DVR to automatically mute every "Backbackback?" ↵

↵

↵Coming Tomorrow: MLB Midseason Awards ↵

↵

↵NASCAR: Kyle Busch. Seven wins. You don't have to know much about NASCAR to know that he is unstoppable right now. ↵

↵

↵NBA Rumor Mill: Ron Artest to the Lakers for Lamar Odom? It got sparked a week ago and continues to be legit enough that you have to believe it is likely to happen. ↵

↵

↵I'm a big fan of this deal, which reminds me of when Phil Jackson assimilated Dennis Rodman -- it all presumes that Phil and Kobe can keep Ron's personality in check. If they do, the Lakers are better. ↵

↵

↵Meanwhile, what are the Clippers going to do with all that cap space? They are looking at Emeka Okafor, Andre Iguodala, Josh Smith and Luol Deng, with no guarantee of landing any of them. ↵

↵

↵Gilbert Arenas officially signs $111M deal with Wizards: And Wiz fans like me can finally breathe a huge sigh of relief. (With Gil, you never know.) As long as the Wiz aren't winning the NBA title, I am glad to continue to have the NBA's most entertaining player on my team. ↵

↵

↵NBA Vegas Summer Rookie Watch: O.J. Mayo made the debut of the weekend, not just going for 26 on Saturday, but posterizing Hilton Armstrong in his debut on Friday. (Mayo had 15 on Sunday, with 6 TO and 0 assists.) ↵

↵

↵More: D.J. Augustin (14.0 ppg over 2 games); Anthony Randolph (11 Sunday after his 30-point debut); Joe Alexander (Dud: 7 pts, 2/13 FG); Eric Gordon was pulled (injury) after two so-so performances (9/28 FG). ↵

↵

↵NHL: Vincent Lecavalier wins the Lightning lotto, with a new 11Y/$85M contract extension that will keep him in Tampa until 2020. ↵

↵

↵CFB: EA's NCAA Football '09 releases at midnight. So who's lining up? If you do, leave your instant reviews in the Comments. ↵

↵

↵Celebrity Boxing: Vai Sikahema earns the thanks of a grateful nation of sports fans for KO'ing Jose Canseco. ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: The Ohio State alumni football ticket lottery is a no-win for an outsider to comment on, let alone a known tOSU-hater: ↵

↵

↵Side with the lottery, and the longtime season-ticket holders hate you; side with the alums, and the fans who had been disenfranchised for years hate you. ↵

↵

↵In the end, I sympathize with the longtime season-ticket holders, but finally getting to go to a game at the Horseshoe -- if you're a tOSU fan -- has to be one of the greatest thrills of your life. ↵

↵

↵Any system that opens up that experience to more fans is, net-net, a good one. Let the longtime ticket-holders scalp like the rest of us. ↵
