I know, I know ... it's great PR for NBA players to do things with cops. Especially when, like it or not, much of the public still perceives our nation's pros as hedonistic outlaws.
Akron's police department is getting some new wheels, courtesy of Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James. He's making a donation to the force of 10 bicycles used last month in his annual "King for Kids" bike-a-thon fund-raiser.So the Akron police are going to prowl the streets with "LEBRON JAMES" on the side of their be-spoked rides? It's true, as the article notes, that bike policing brings law enforcement into better contact with civilians, though it's not quite as accessible as walking a beat (Note to LBJ: Get those foot patrols some Foot Patrols!). In a sense, this sets up LeBron as the bridge between The People and The Man.
The Cannondale brand bikes have James' name emblazoned on them. They'll be outfitted with disc brakes, shocks, lights and sirens so they can be used by police for patrolling.

I’m a student at the University of Akron.. So I’m speaking from experience.
That police force needs way more than 10 freaking bicycles. They need more people on the force first of all, but they need cars.. Those streets, especially the back ones near campus are awful. I was living in a dorm located a little bit off campus and the area was not pretty.
I’ve been to downtown Akron a few times.. It’s just not a great place.. This civil interaction thing is a lot of junk.
I’m going to be on the lookout for these LeBron James bikes come late August..

Its easy for alot of these athletes like James who make more then their share of million$ with contracts and endorements. To do something like this article states it doesn’t go unnoticed but at the end of the tax year don’t claim all of these so called gifts and charity donations cause if they do then the Federal Government ends upi picking up the tab. So in reality its note charitry its a loan!

I have no problem with LeBron doing anything to help out his hometown. Wouldn’t it look a lot worse if he didn’t do anything at all, given his fame and well…FORTUNE?
