Shanoff's Wake-Up Call: Janet's 'Wardrobe Malfunction' Didn't Cause an End to the World

Today's Calls: Brett Favre vs. Janet Jackson, A-Rod vs. Jorge Posada, Rich Harden vs. Matt Holliday, Jeremy Shockey vs. Jason Taylor, Clemson vs. Texas Tech, Ron Artest vs. Josh Childress and More. ↵

↵The Opening Pitch: Rumors of Brett Favre curtailing his comeback? Bah: Wouldn't you rather revisit Janet Jackson's nipple? ↵

↵

↵Four years later, here's the truth about the "wardrobe malfunction": ↵

↵

↵It wasn't the end of civilization, and it certainly didn't warrant the FCC's intrusion and reckless fine. That's what many of us said at the time -- and what the courts confirmed yesterday. ↵

↵

↵Instead, for better or worse, it was -- and remains -- the single-most memorable moment in the history of the NFL -- and possibly all sports on TV. ("Ice Bowl?" Please.) ↵

↵

↵No other moment combined: the massive stage of the Super Bowl; celebrity that crossed over from sports into pop-culture relevance; and a game-changing technological development called "TiVo" that gave fans everywhere the chance to rewind the live broadcast (like we did at my house) to say, "Was that what I think it was?" ↵

↵

↵You may not even remember who won that game -- or any particular Super Bowl. But ask anyone if they remember Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," and they will recall it like it was yesterday. ↵

↵

↵And now, thanks to the courts, you can finally feel good about reveling in its campy fun. ↵

↵

↵Favre Comeback Over? In a self-admitted "unconfirmed tip," Mike Florio says that Favre wasn't interested in any of the (presumably mediocre) teams the Packers were willing to trade him to. ↵

↵

↵If the tip holds up, apparently, Favre -- desperate to un-retire and get back into the NFL -- would rather not play at all than play for the Green Bay fans. What a statement THAT would be. ↵

↵

↵MLB Instant History: When the subject turns to a rumored A-Rod/Madonna sex tape, the only safe haven is in the box scores ... ↵

↵

↵Once again, A-Rod meets tabloid frenzy with on-field focus: He hit his 21st HR and NYY won their 4th in 4 games since the All-Star break. ... ↵

↵

↵Injury Watch: Jorge Posada isn't just going to the DL; he may have season-ending shoulder surgery. ↵

↵

↵Milestone Watch: The Tigers became the first team since 1950 to score 19 runs 3 times in a season. (Cabrera: 5 H, 6 RBI; Joyce: 4 H, 5 RBI.) ↵

↵

↵Tampa Bandwagon: The Rays shut out the A's to go 1.5 games up in the AL East (Stars will be stars: That would be a 8th W for Kazmir and a 19th HR for Longo.) ↵

↵

↵Fantasy Stud: Rich Harden. OK, so he lost in a pitchers' duel with the Big Unit. But you can't argue with 10 Ks in 7 IP, with 1 H and 1 ER. ... ↵

↵

↵MLB Trade Bait: Matt Holliday. Are the Rockies ready to trade their franchise cornerstone (and starting All-Star outfielder) to a contender? The Mets and Angels are both rumored to be interested. ↵

↵

↵(On the pitching side, the Mets are involved in another name that is presumably up for grabs: Huston Street.) ↵

↵

↵More NFL Trades: Jeremy Shockey to the Saints. He was useless last season during the Giants' season-ending championship surge; presumably, he has a greater chance of being arrested on Bourbon Street than he does finding a place in the Pro Bowl. ↵

↵

↵Contract extension for Brian Urlacher: Makes complete sense for the Bears to lock up their best player and franchise poster guy. ↵

↵

↵CFB Media Daze: ACC. The trendy pick is ... Clemson -- they of the "other" Bowden and the double shot of insanely talented RBs and the lightweight schedule (but also consistency in losing games they should win). ↵

↵

↵ACC's National-title Factor: Oh, sure, Clemson could run the table, but that would be defying their nature. Is it possible that even an unbeaten ACC team wouldn't have the BCS respect of a 1-loss USC or SEC champ? ↵

↵

↵CFB Media Daze: Big 12. The trendy pick is ... Texas Tech -- they of the insane offense and the politically incorrect hand gestures and the record-setting freshman WR and the genius coach who loves pirates. ↵

↵

↵Meanwhile, unbeaten Missouri is playing with a BCS-sized chip on its shoulder. Kansas is trying to prove it wasn't a one-year wonder. And Oklahoma and Texas just roll on, still in each other's way. ↵

↵

↵National-title Factor: Oh, sure, several of these teams might be one of the best in the country, but they will brutalize each other into championship oblivion. ↵

↵

↵(Not to be lost in the Media Days haze: The ACC will publish weekly injury reports. "Injury reports" is code for "gambling information," but the league insists it will save coaches the hassle of answering questions about players' status. I'd just deal with the hassle.) ↵

↵

↵Tebow Watch: There will be no Playboy All-America team for the reigning Heisman winner. Like his idol Danny Wuerffel, Tebow opted out. He won't lack for preseason magazine covers next month. ↵

↵

↵NBA Trade Rumors: Ron Artest to the Pistons? The central figure of the "Malice at the Palace" playing FOR Detroit? History aside, that's a move that could bring the Pistons even with the Celtics. ↵

↵

↵Josh Childress is the new Brandon Jennings: Childress has a sizeable offer from a team in Greece to bolt the NBA for Europe. He would lose his relevance here ... but who cares? Embrace the novelty! ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: If Iowa is proven guilty of trying to cover up a sexual assault, someone better get fired. ↵

↵

↵The leading Iowa football blog, Black Heart Gold Pants, takes a leadership position among Iowa media with its message to Kirk Ferentz: Resign. ↵
