How Not to Win Over Fans, By Jimmy Rollins

After winning the MVP award in '07, calling Jimmy Rollins’ season a “down year” would be a rather large understatement. His OBP has remained about the same, but his runs, HRs, RBI numbers are all way down and he’s hitting about 25-points lower. He was also benched a couple weeks ago for showing up late for a game against the Mets. Seeing as the two teams are in a tie for first, I don’t need to tell you how important every game against NY is for Philly.

So, with all that in mind, I can imagine that the Phillies faithful have been on J-Roll more than just a little bit this season. Based on his appearance on Best Damn Sports Show Period last night, Rollins isn’t too happy about his treatment from the fans:

Philly fans are many, many things (obnoxious, classless, rude, passionate, but yeah, mostly obnoxious), but “frontrunners” probably isn’t one of them. The city hasn’t won a major sports championship in 25 years, so if they were indeed frontrunning, they all would’ve given up about two decades ago. But don’t worry, Jimmy, I’m sure all the Philly fans will have forgotten about your televised insults by the time you return home next Tuesday.

The funny thing is, considering Rollins is having such a down year, the Philly fans up until recently have been giving him a free pass.
