Bela Is Telling You: Liukin's a Champion

Aside from watching the actual gymnastics competitions (yeah, I’ve been watching. Wanna fight about it?), the best part of NBC’s coverage has been former coach Béla Károlyi. Half the time I can’t understand him, but the guy could be speaking Romanian, and his feelings would still be crystal clear. Here he is last night getting so excited over Nastia Liukin’s floor exercise that he nearly crushes Little Bobby Costas:

My attempts to stay up for the entire all-around competition were spoiled by my midnight bed time. I was quite pleased to learn this morning that the American ladies took gold and silver. Well done, indeed.

In other not-so-well-done Olympic news this morning, James Blake, who we heaped praise on 24 hours ago, lost in the semi-finals to Fernando Gonzalez. And by “lost” I mean “choked, violently.” He was up 40-love, 6-5 in the final set, and couldn’t convert on any of this three match points. Blake went on to lose 11-9 in that final set.
