The most earth-shattering news that has come out of Beijing, in my opinion, is that not all athletic venues overcharge for beer. Enrico Campitelli Jr. reports at FanHouse that beer at the Bird's Nest in Beijing -- host of the track and field events -- is only 75 cents a pop. That's less than a tenth of the price at most American arenas.
One friend of mine actually purchased eight beers at one time and had the friendly concession workers put them nicely in a box for him to carry back to his seat.At an NFL game, $5.75 gets you a box of Hot Tamales and a slap on the ass. (Although at Monster Park in S.F., the slap on the ass is complimentary.) There are a million things about Beijing I could do without -- suffocating smog, human rights violations, locomotive flesh sausages. But cheap beer, man. We can't let China beat us on this.
Not only are beers plentiful but they're also ridiculously cheap. ... [M]y purchase of 6 Budweisers and two ice creams came to a whopping total of 40 RMB or approximately $5.75 US.
