Strahan's Decision Is Good For All Involved

Take note, Favre, this is how you end an un-retirement saga quickly, decisively, and painlessly. Michael Strahan has already announced that he won’t be returning to the Giants this season to replace injured end Osi Umenyiora:
"He was very close to returning, but the great part about Michael is that he takes his time to think about things and he is very thorough," [Agent] Tony Agnone said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday night. "You can get excited about coming back and running through the tunnel one more time."

"This has been one of the toughest nights of my life," Strahan told FoxSports.com. "But after long deliberation and throwing around a million scenarios in my head for the past day, I think it's just best if I stay retired."

"I really love my life now," Strahan said. "It's great having nobody put a finger on me. You really put yourself through an awful lot in this league, more than people realize.

In the end, I think it’s the best decision for everyone. When you combine the massive amount of money it would’ve cost the Giants, plus the uncertainty about Strahan’s current condition and ability, then it’s probably best for both sides that he stay retired. On top of that, the team has Mathias Kiwanuka, who is a physical-freakish, man-child in his own right, to move from linebacker back to his collegiate position at defensive end.

The only person who should walk away from this whole thing unhappy is Chris Mortenson, who not only missed out on months of “reports” via his “sources,” but also lost out on this story to Jay Glazer at Fox Sports, who seems to be beating everyone to scoops lately.

"It’s great having nobody put a finger on me." That’s a great quote! I know that most football players (defensive ends for sure) like to put on a good hit. But that means taking your share of hits as well. When he says "You really put yourself through an awful lot in this league, more than people realize," I could sense a man at peace with his decision.

The difference between this and Favre..  This was all about money, had the Giants thrown out 7-8 million plus at Strahan he’d be suiting up right now..  For Favre it was about still wanting to play, the fact that he ended up getting a nice paycheck was a bonus.  Strahan was almost done last season before coming back after the preseason (and helped the Giants win a Superbowl, nice move).  If Favre had wanted the money he’d have taken the MultiMillion dollar offer from GreenBay to stay retired and gone on vacation.

Actually if Favre had wanted the money he would have done just what he did, come back to play. He stands to earn a heckuva lot more cash now than he ever would if he stayed away from the game…$12 million versus $2 million is a ways apart!

Oh yeah, ESPN is missing out on sports stories and scoops because they are too busy kissing Barack Obama’s butt! How many glowing profiles does this guy get, and how many contortions are they going to go thru at ESPN to try to make them sports related?
