Good Thing Dallas Didn't Lose That 'Must-Win'

What an incredible game last night. It had everything you’d want: Tony Romo going from perfect to foolish to perfect again, Donovan McNabb looking like he did four years ago, both of them connecting on deep bombs, DeSean Jackson being generous enough to give Brian Westbrook an extra TD, and a back-and-forth scoreboard that was truly thrilling, even as a fan, like me, who dislikes both franchises.

Unfortunately, it also had Tony Kornheiser. Now, we have no intention of this being a weekly feature or anything, but dammit, Kornheiser just can’t stop giving us great material. Last Monday night, it was his overuse of the word “Favre” that drove us insane. This week, it was this unbelievable exchange with Mike Tirico and Jaws in the fourth quarter, in which he insisted that this was a must-win game for Dallas ... in Week 2:

Tony K: They have to win this game. You have to open up at home, in the division, against the Eagles, and you have to beat them.

Jaws: Well, I wouldn't use the word "have" to beat them.

Tony K: If you believe you're a Super Bowl team, this is the game you must win.

Jaws: The Chargers thought they were a Super Bowl team, too, and they lost in the first two games. It's a long season. You don't wanna put all your eggs in one basket this soon.

Tirico: Too soon.

Tony K: Well, that's what the fans think.

So, in other words, had the Cowboys not won last night, Kornheiser is saying they could no longer consider themselves Super Bowl contenders. Because they lost in Week 2 and would’ve dropped all they way to 1-1. You don’t need me to tell you how insanely stupid that is. I think somewhere in the middle of the exchange, Kornheiser kinda realized this, and then tried to play it off, claiming “that’s what the fans think.”

Oh, well, did Tony K take some sort of informal poll to determine the pulse of Dallas fans before the game? Or is he just assuming they’re dumb enough to believe the second game of the season is a must-win? Either way, Cowboys faithful should know this: Kornheiser thinks you’re all idiots. As a Redskins fan, I’d like to agree with him, but I’ll give Big D a little more credit than that.

Either way, the point is kinda moot now, seeing as Dallas won and improved to 2-0. Philly, on the other hand, fell to 1-1 and should start planning for the off-season now.

Well, you do play to win the game. So it would seem that every game is a must-win?

Much like every post is a must read.

That’s some killer logic.

Glad you called him out for this. What an absurd statement, especially coming off a season in which the Super Bowl champs started 0-2.
