Howard Explains Himself, Declares Love for USA

The penitent Josh Howard follow-up we all knew was coming happened, and it wasn't too embarrassing for anyone involved. As covered by the Dallas News, Howard spoke in public for the first time since the flag controversy, and did so with the care and seriousness you'd expect from a man who has dug himself into one huge hole. Or, as Howard himself put it:
"I have the biggest block on my shoulder that I plan on knocking off and letting everybody know this is the same Josh Howard that came into the league and helped the Dallas Mavericks team [succeed]."
But the key quote might be when the Mavs swingman explains exactly how he relates to the flag and anthem. It wasn't when he called himself a momentary "idiot," or said "I love this country." No, it was when Howard actually gave us reason to believe that, even if he's capable of cutting remarks, there's no questioning where his heart, and roots, are:
"It was just me joking around. I just wasn't using my head. I learned that words really do hurt and you are held accountable for what you said. I went to military school. I have friends that serve in the military. I know how it is to wake up and salute the flag. In the national anthem every game, I have my hand over my heart."
For some, this may come across as the equivalent of "I have black friends" or "I went to a diverse high school." But it does prove what some of us have been saying about Howard all along: That despite the occasional inability to self-censor, and the minor legal infractions, he's also a good guy with solid character and values. Like, in a way that warrants saying that with a straight face. Someone we can't quite demonize or idolize, despite having characteristics of both sides. Seems like the key will come in keeping a balance between the two going.

There is nothing to explain, he made some stupid decisions and was roasted accordinly.  I hope he engages his brain before he decides to do something stupid.

I don’t buy the caught up in the joking around thing for his explanation of disgracing our flag. If he were in China the military might have sent their hit squad at him and I can’t say I would whole heartedly disagree with that decision. The diversity our nation has in it’s unmatched amount of different cultures is not appreciated by the terrorists, Josh Howard, and the like.
