With Brady Done For the Year, AFC Suddenly Seems Up For Grabs

When Tom Brady went down in the first quarter against the Chiefs today, we had a bad feeling about the injury -- it just didn't look good. As time passed, it didn't sound good either, as we were given absolutely no updates from the Patriots, which would lead one to believe the injury was indeed serious.

Well, if what Yahoo!'s Michael Silver is hearing is true, the worst is about to be realized for New England: Brady out for the rest of the season.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to a source familiar with the injury.

While New England coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference that he had no update on the status of Brady’s injury, two sources indicated it involved serious damage to the knee.

“It’s bad,” a team source said. “We’re going to have to play without him.”

Hmmm ... who was that other QB who suffered a torn ACL after having his best season and was never an effective player in the league again? Oh, right, Daunte Culpepper, who retired via e-mail this week. I'm not sayin' Brady's career is over if this report is true or anything crazy like that, I'm just sayin' ...

Let's see: Brady out for the season, the Colts and Chargers perhaps not being the contenders everyone thought they were, Jacksonville losing to Tennessee ... suddenly, the AFC seems as up for grabs as the NFC. More specifically, the AFC East is certainly wide open. So much so, that Bill Cowher -- on national television -- called the Bills the favorites in this new, Brady-less division. The Gunslinger might have something to say about that.

As this evening progresses, the news out of NE is not good.  Until it is official, those wonderful " inside sources" leaks will be the news.  Let’s wait until Monday AM for the real news.  In the mean time..

I know it will happen, the gloating will start about this injury to Brady and the impact to the Pats season.  It was quite interesting to see, though, how well Cassell played given his preseason efforts.  I would have to say the only non-Patriots fans out there who are crying in their spilled milk right now are the fantasy league players who have TB as their #1 QB.  Otherwise, there are many out there, who may not post their true feelings here, that are wringing their hands in glee that Brady was hurt and the Pats will not be the same team in ‘08.  Unfortunately, in other sites such as USA Today, Fox & CBS Sports, there have been posts in which there was glee in the news about Brady’s injury.  Sportsmanship doesn’t rule the day everywhere.

Theres no way you can count the Pats out… Just no way.

The next best team in the AFC is who… The Bills?

Well lets look at their quaterback who must be pretty good if there the new favorites …

Trent Edwards: 19/30 63% 215 yards 1 TD 0 INT and a 95.8 passer rating

Matt Cassel : 13/18  72%  156 yards 1 TD 0 INT and a 116 passer rating

Looks to me like Cassel had a better day…

If the media outside New England, like Sportin News or YSports are reporting based on information from "unnamed sources" and the local media do not report it, then the speculation that Brady’s season is over is probably not accurate.  If it’s true, the local media will make it the lead story in about 40 minutes when the 10:00 news begins.

I didn’t see both games, so I’m not sure who actually played better (’cause, you know, stats are only part of the story), but based just on those numbers, I have no clue how you can conclude that Cassel had the better day. ’Cause he had 6 fewer incomplete passes? He also had 59 less yards.

Cassel had a better day why? Because of a better passer rating? Well Brian Moorman, the Bills punter, went 1/1 for 19 yards and a TD. Perfect passer rating. I guess he must be the best QB of the bunch. In fact, Brady has never even had a perfect passer rating. Great logic…

All the hype about the Chargers, Jaguars and Colts as the elite teams in the AFC and all of them open the season with losses. But the Steelers who don’t get the respect and are always over looked win with complete domination! Gee I wonder what the critics are saying right about now, after week one the Steelers are the favorite in the AFC. You think?
