Even Miami Wants No Part of Jose Canseco

Back in ’97, 10 blocks along 16th street in Miami that had previously been named Jose Canseco Street were stripped of the juicer’s name after students at his alma mater -- Coral Park high -- complained. Today, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe Martinez is proposing repmoving the last remaining stretch of road named for Canseco along 16th street removed:
And on Tuesday, Martinez will offer a resolution to permanently remove Canseco's name from the West Miami-Dade street it has swung over for almost two decades.

''I think it's an embarrassment. It runs through my district, right by my office,'' said Martinez, who drives Southwest 16th Street -- aka Jose Canseco Street -- a few times a week.

The most problematic part for Martinez: The ever swelling size of the sign, and the glare resulting from the gallons of spray-on tanner it requires. It makes watching the shirtless rollerbladers gliding by his office difficult.
