Figurs Signing More Than Meets the Eye

Yamon Figurs doesn’t have the name recognition of a Matt Jones or other wide recievers the Bucs worked out, but he does have something the others don’t have:

… you also need to recognize one other aspect to this move. Figurs played at Kansas State – with Tampa Bay rookie quarterback Josh Freeman. Figurs might not be able to come in and take the starting job immediately from Michael Clayton, who’s been having problems with drops, but Jones and Tyree weren’t going to do that either.

Figurs is a guy that Freeman has a comfort level with and that’s going to be important in the future. Freeman’s going to be the quarterback of this team sooner or later and the signing of Figurs might be a sign that’s coming sooner and not later.

WR Matt Jones May Be Close to Finding Work Again

Despite last year being the best season of his so-far-disappointing career, WR Matt Jones was cut from the Jaguars in March. This came after he was arrested for violating his plea agreement, an agreement which resulted from his previous arrest in '08 for cocaine possession.

But now the free agent may be close to getting a second chance. According to ESPN.com, the Bucs are giving Jones a work out. And while they aren't the only team interested (Cowboys, Dolphins, Jets, Bears), there may not be another club in more dire need of a WR.

From the Tampa Tribune:

Tampa Bay (0-5) is seeking help at receiver after three dropped passes by Michael Clayton on Sunday at Philadelphia. Tight end Kellen Winslow leads the Bucs in receptions with 26 for 257 yards and four touchdowns; running back Cadillac Williams is second with 15 reception for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Never a good sign when your leading receivers are your tight end followed closely by the running back. And this despite the fact that the Bucs have attempted the second most passes in the NFC -- something our Tampa blogger at Buc Em isn't thrilled about.

Although Jones may not be the instant solution, he did have 65 catches last season. Plus, he's 6'6" and runs a 4.37 40, two facts which will keep him lingering around the league for years.
