The Heisman hopeful had the cast on his left forearm removed today but Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly says Pike won't see the field this weekend "unless it's an emergency situation."

Update: Tony Pike Will Not Play Saturday

From SB Nation’s Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician comes the news that Tony Pike will not play Saturday against the ’Cuse:

Brian Kelly has all but eliminated the possibility that quarterback Tony Pike will play Saturday against Syracuse. Kelly said during a Thursday night radio show that “I can’t see him playing this weekend unless it’s an emergency situation.”

Update: Tony Pike Has Cast Altered, Hopes to Play Saturday Vs. Syracuse

Despite Zach Collaros’ impressive showing for the Bearcats this weekend (he threw 3 TDs in an easy win over Louisville) as a replacement, Cincinnati is hoping that their Heisman trophy candidate at Quarterback, Tony Pike, could return as early as this weekend. The Associated Press reports he’s already taken steps to alter his cast so that he can throw easier with a broken arm.

From the AP:

Quarterback Tony Pike is having the cast on his left arm modified so he’ll have a better chance to play for No. 5 Cincinnati. […]

Coach Brian Kelly said Monday that Pike would have the cast modified later in the day. Kelly plans to see how he can function in practice on Tuesday, then go from there as Cincinnati (7-0) prepares for a game Saturday at Syracuse (3-4).

So while it still appears he’s got some hurdles to clear before Coach Kelly names him the starter, it certainly looks like both the staff and Pike, himself, are hoping to get back on the field ASAP. We’ll have more news as it emerges.

Update: Report: QB Pike Out, Collaros Will Start

ESPN’s Joe Schad is reporting that Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike, who was previously expected to start Saturday’s 3:30 game against Louisville, has been scratched.

Coach Brian Kelly said this week that in order for Pike to play he’d have to show that he could protect his injured arm. Collaros, a sophomore, is mobile and has the experience of replacing Pike when he was injured against South Florida. Collaros ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Update: Despite Having 'Procedure', Tony Pike Looks Likely To Play On Saturday

Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reports that Cincinati QB Tony Pike underwent an undisclosed “procedure” on his left forearm on Tuesday. Doctors reportedly fixed the plate in his arm that had been dislodged last week after originally being put in last year.

Pike is expected to miss practice for the next two days, but should return on Thursday. He is listed as day-to-day, and looks likely to play in the team’s game this weekend against a struggling Louisville squad.

Update: Tony Pike Practices For Cincinnati, Status Remains Unclear

Cincinnati QB Tony Pike might play Saturday against Louisville.  Then again he might need surgery.  Despite the fact that he was in practice today for the No. 5 Bearcats, no decision has been made and his status remains up in the air.

Pike broke his left forearm last season and has a plate and six screws in it. The plate moved when he was hit in the first half against South Florida. He tried to play one series in the second half before giving way to Zach Collaros.

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said he would let Pike practice and then make a decision on his status closer to the game.

Collaros covered for Pike quite well against South Florida.  Since Cincy plays an empty backfield set with Pike, coach Brian Kelly wants to make sure his QB can protect himself.  Given that the Cardinals present far less of a threat than the Bulls did, there might be good reason to consider keeping Pike off the field for the time being.

Update: Pike Has Wrist Examined Today in Cincinnati

According to the Associated Press, Bearcats QB Tony Pike was scheduled to meet with an orthopedist today to determine whether there’s a need for surgery on the wrist he injured in last night’s win over South Florida:

An orthopedist will determine whether Cincinnati senior quarterback Tony Pike needs surgery on his left forearm, which would be a major setback for the No. 8 Bearcats.

Pike was scheduled for an examination on Friday. Cincinnati (6-0) expected a decision on his status by Monday. Until then, he’ll be listed as day to day.

So far, there’s no word on what went on in Pike’s meeting, but we’ll have updates on the situations as soon as news emerges.

Bearcats' Pike Has Sprained Wrist, Will Miss Next Week's Game

While the charmed season continued last night for the Cincinnati Bearcats--they handled South Florida with ease--the victory did not come without a cost. Bearcats Quarterback and Heisman hopeful Tony Pike was injured after throwing two touchdown passes early in the game. Cincinnati's Zach Corrallos was more than capable in relief, including a spectacular 74-yard run, but even so, he's no Tony Pike.

From the Associated Press:

Cincinnati will have to find a way to keep its high-octane offense going without Tony Pike for at least one more game.

The No. 8 Bearcats lost their starting quarterback to a sprained left wrist during Thursday night's 34-17 victory over No. 21 South Florida, and the severity of the injury will be determined by a specialist.

Coach Brian Kelly said Pike, who broke his left forearm last season and played with a plate and six screws that are still in place, will miss Cincinnati's next game, at home Oct. 24 against Louisville.

"The plate that's in there has shifted," Kelly said, adding that it has not been determined if the injury will require surgery. He expects to know more after Pike undergoes an examination on Friday.

We'll have more as it emerges from Cincy.
