Mariano Rivera and the Case of the Spitball

It was only a fleeting moment in Monday night's game, and one that the FOX TV crew didn't even acknowledge, but there was Mariano Rivera, looking around and then spitting in the direction of the baseball he was about to throw. Did the spit make contact with the ball? I've watched the video ten times, and even checked out these frame-by-frame screen grabs and I still can't tell.

Many people seem to think that guilty glance -- the moment where Rivera appears to be checking if anyone is watching him -- is the smoking gun. The conspiracy theories about FOX cutting away quickly are silly though. TV production like that moves so quickly that there's no way a mass coverup is really happening as many Angels fans/Yankees haters would like to believe.

The story is definitely out there and circulating, so here's hoping someone at the ball park will ask about the alleged spitball before or after today's game.

UPDATE: MLB is looking into the spitting incident.

UPDATE 2: From the same link above:

The Commissioners Office reviewed available video and still photography from Mariano Rivera spitting toward a baseball in ALCS Game 3 and “found no evidence that Rivera spit on the ball,” a spokesman for the commissioner told the Post.

I doubt there’s any Fox conspiracy.

Their baseball coverage makes me ill w/ the diff’t shots changing every 0.75 seconds.

Take 5 minutes of tonight’s game and count how many shots you see of fans in the stands, nonsense shots of the manager stroking his chin, ballpark vendors and self-promotion.

During that same 5 minutes, see if you can determine where the infielders are positioned.  Is the 1B holding the runner?  Is the infield in w/ 1 out a man on 3rd early in the game?  You won’t know because you’ll be watching the cast of "Bones" candidly enjoying a hot-dog in the front row.

And don’t get me started on McCarver…

Give me a break.  A spitter doesn’t go 90+mph, it’s a way to throw a change up.  Way to reach for excuses.

Mariano does not need to doctor a ball. Let’s move on. Non-story.

Mariano Rivera is a New York Yankee baseball player and pitcher, he became even well known for spitting on the ball before he throws it. No one wants to ever defend a New York Yankee, but a Rivera’s spitball isn’t really likely.  Despite the fact that he plays for the most evil team in the MLB, a Rivera spitball isn’t likely, and his defeated opponents probably should stop whining.  Mariano Rivera is known as a stand up guy, a dedicated professional, and his numbers – they speak for themselves, and there aren’t many 39 year olds that still have a 90 mph plus fastball.  Once again – it is hard to defend the Yankees about anything, though while we’re at it – A Rod was on steroids!  Seriously – the Angels need a cash advance to find something to do, other than talk about a non-existent Rivera spitball.
