Mount Cody Helps Stave Off "Rocky Top" Renditions, SEC Avoids Another Controversy

Tennessee and Alabama played a close, conservative game to the death this afternoon, but the tight grip only did in the Vols. Above, we have what happens when you get into field goal range, then sit on the ball with plays that waste 40 seconds of valuable time: Terrence Cody blocked this kick, his second of the day, and preserved Alabama's 12-10 win and their perch atop the AP Poll and SEC West.

But watch the lower-right corner of the brackish video around the 0:22 mark, and you can see Cody remove his helmet on the field. With the recent history of SEC refs, could the crew have blown that call?

Possibly. But this crew didn't: Search "helmet" in this PDF and it seems clear that the foul would have been a dead ball penalty that would have been at most fifteen yards against Alabama after the change of possession.

SEC bigwigs in Birmingham must be breathing easier because of that. That's not the only place in Alabama thanking their lucky stars for narrowly avoided disaster tonight.

Let’s put this in perspective.  Tennessee, an unranked team, a nothing team for six games except for UGA, didn’t allow the #1 AP team in the nation to score a single offensive touchdown.  In fact they came so very close to beating Bama.  What do we learn from this?  Bama is not as good as the hype has them, or Lane Kiffin et al might be just as good as the Vol faithful believe them to be.  For a team that looked like pansies against UCLA and Auburn, who now don’t amount to much, those Vols put on a heavy weight match with the Tide that recalls those days of yore when Ala/Tenn was the game of the year.  All the buzz is rightfully about the progress of Tenn on a path to a dynasty in a year or so, and the buzz about Ala is they escaped by the skin of their teeth and will be slaughtered by Fla.

You forgot the part where any game cannot end on a defensive penalty.

Why would there be change of possesion?  He took his helmet off during the play and that stops the play.  It was third down so Tenn ball first and 10 with 1 play left.

Might be wrong on stopping the play but the play wasn’t over so definetly should have been a penalty since the play wasn’t blown dead.  Remember the Ray Rudd penalty for minnesota vikings?  Pro and College could be different but IDK.

Alabama played their 8th game in a row against a team coming off a bye.  Tennessee had the 3rd ranked D in the country last year, and they are again one of the best units in the country.  It’s a rivalry game.  UT is finally getting in rhythm with an entirely new set of coaches.  I could go on and on, but this nonsense of equating this win versus that win gets tiresome.  College football fans should know better.

Alabama will have to find another gear on offense to win the SEC Championship, no question, but the idea that Florida, who has destroyed no one this year, would destroy Alabama is beyond cognitive dysfunction.  Believe me, after watching my Tar Heels go winless in an anemic ACC this year, I can appreciate great football teams.  Alabama is one of them.

Guys, stop focusing on a silly moment of removing a helmet.  I’m glad there was no call – it would have been ludicrous, regardless of the rules, to rob Bama of this moment, if that is even possible (I’m still not sure what could have been called and what could have been it’s impact, and don’t care.)

ladyvols – I wouldn’t be sure about Florida slaughtering the Tide.  I heard some similar comments last year, and yet Bama was leading the Gators going into the 4th Qtr of the SEC C’ship game last year.

I honestly think Florida is the better team right now, but if Bama can get it’s offensive mojo back, I would even favor them over the Gators.  I don’t see anyone easily defeating (let alone slaughtering) the Tide with their defense as good as it is.

Don’t read TOO much into the Tenn game, ladyvols or anyone else.  Tennessee is better than people think, especially defensively, just ask Florida.  And the Tide has been getting the better of the Vols lately (including a few blow-outs) and Tennessee probably looked at this as both payback AND a game that could turn around their season, a season that has floundered so far.

Sorry tall texan, but "pay back", "blow outs" and all other cliches have nothing to do with that game.  For seven months or so there has been a vomiting binge on how  Lane Kiffin was a loud mouth and had no coaching credentials and bla bla bla.  Fans nation wide were salivating at the prospect of every team on the Vol schedule rubbing Kiffin’s face in it.  The simple truth is he found the cubbard bare of talent, took what he had and game by game fashioned a football team.  His coaching in today’s game was as good as any coach in the nation has demonstrated this year.  He was a match for anything (except Mt. Cody) that Saban could call or put on the field.  Do the math and all stats will confirm that.  And what really blows me away is he never shows any particular emotion on the side lines.  Just does exactly what he promised the Vol nation he would do when he was hired.  He will have an NC team in two years, mark it down.

The ball wasn’t dead when Cody’s helmet came off.  The ball was still "live" until Julio scooped it up and tossed it to Ro while lying on his back.  By that time, Cody was halfway to the sideline and celebrating.  TN could have actually advanced the ball if they had gotten to it and why none of them even tried is beyond me.  But the whole thing was total chaos from the moment the kick was blocked with all kinds of people running on the field from both sidelines.

Quit hyperventelating, morons
The ‘removing the helmet’ penalty is an NFL foul and not part of the college rulebook.  Sorry, but the ‘ARM OF GOD’ also removed his helmet and won the game
Get over it, conspiracy theorists

I think UT fans have to be happy with how the coaching staff is doing.  Had to expect some tough sledding since they were completely brand new but they are getting better every game and that’s what you want to see.  The UT-USC Halloween game is REALLY important for the SEC pecking order and looking toward next year when the SEC East could be wide open with Florida losing a lot of people and UGa breaking in another new QB.

oh well, after cycling through 45 mentions of helmet in the rulebook I found:  (f) Removal of a player’s helmet before he is in the team area

oh well. Sucks for the Vols, huh?

They all look sloppy but Bama falls to #3, Florida remains #1, & Texas takes the #2 spot. Right now the Gators & Bama are a wash defensively however the Gators offense is superior. At minimum they have a QB.

I think we can all agree that with a mug like that, he should have definitely left the helmet ON.

Well Andy Hutchins is not aware of the past game between TN and AL which are normal defensive fights and close scores.  What can you expect from a worthless hack!

Um, RockyTopVols1: What does that have to do with anything?I do, actually, know the history of the rivalry, and was expecting a close game; that happened. Is there something else I didn’t get that makes me a "hack"?Also, to all: I re-read the rules, and it seems clear that the ball is either just past the line of scrimmage when it lands (dead ball) or recovered before the line of scrimmage by Alabama. Either way, whatever penalty could have/would have been charged to Cody would only have moved the Tide. Now, if Tennessee had recovered it before the line of scrimmage, I believe they would have had the ball plus the result of the penalty. That’s a stunner.
