Update: Brian Westbrook Is 'Ready To Roll' In Week 16

Brian Westbrook, who has not played since Nov. 15 after he suffered two concussions in three weeks, is expected to play in Philadelphia's Week 16 game against Denver.

"Unless there is a setback here, I think that’s what he’s counting on and the doctors, and everybody else," Reid said.

Reid said earlier in the week that the team would be keeping close watch of Westbrook's reps and that it could take time to get him back in the lineup. However, Reid said, Westbrook should bring some "fresh legs" to the offense.

Update: Don't Expect Brian Westbrook To Play Against 49ers This Week

Brian Westbrook, who has missed six of the past seven weeks due to concussions, was set to return to practice with the Eagles on Wednesday, but that doesn't mean much for his playing status in Sunday's game with the 49ers. In fact, a source said "that there's almost no way Westbrook makes it back by Sunday." Head coach Andy Reid is equally pesimistic

Eagles coach Andy Reid said the concussion tests on running back Brian Westbrook are "better, but not all the way there." Asked if he were planning to play without Westbrook on Sunday against San Francisco, Reid said, "I am today ... It's a day-to-day thing." Westbrook will practice with scout team again today, Reid said. Reid said the team is "just getting him back into football shape."

When asked if he was moving forward as if Westbrook would be unavailable Sunday, Reid answered, "I am today."

Update: Westbrook Likely Out For 3 Weeks

Eagles’ running back Brian Westbrook is expected to miss the next three weeks with lingering effects from a concussion suffered earlier this month according to Jeffrey McLane’s twitter. If that holds true Westbrook’s likely return date would be December 13 when Philadelphia travels to New York to take on the rival Giants.

The Eagles, who are trailing the Cowboys by a game in the NFC East, will likely continue relying on rookie LeSean McCoy with Westbrook out.

Update: Westbrook Out For Sunday, Long-Term Prognosis Good

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will unsurprisingly miss the team’s Week 11 game against the Bears as he recovers from the after-effects of his second concussion, according to CBS Sports.

Despite being out this week, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the two concussion specialists in Pittsburgh who Westbrook consulted with announced that his long-term prognosis is good, and that he should make a full recovery. Westbrook’s second concussion was not as severe as his first, and his only symptoms now are “dizzyness and headaches”. Whether this means Westbrook will return this year, or be cleared to do next season, is unclear at this point.

Update: Brian Westbrook To Visit Concussion Specialist

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will consult with a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh after Westbrook suffered his second concussion of the season last week. Westbrook will seek an opinion on when or if he can resume playing.

Schefter points out that Steve Young, Troy Aikman, and Bill Romanowski — who all had their careers end due to concussions — previously consulted with this specialist, so it’s certainly an inauspicious sign that Westbrook is meeting with him.

But considering how serious and long-lasting the after-effects of concussions can be, it is clearly the right move. The Philadelphia press has already begun calling for Westbrook to either sit out the rest of the year or retire, given his long-term health issues, and it seems like such an announcement will only be a matter of time.

Update: Westbrook Leaves Chargers Game With, You Guessed It, A Concussion

Two weeks ago Brian Westbrook suffered a concussion. After leaving Sunday’s game with the Chargers, it’s happened again: Fox is reporting Westbrook’s injury is indeed a concussion, his second in three weeks. This is not safe, and not good for Westbrook moving forward.

Update: Eagles RB Westbrook Practices On Friday, Listed As Probable

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook was back on the practice field on Friday for the second consecutive day, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Westbrook is listed as probable for this Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

He has missed the last two games while recovering from the aftereffects of the concussion he suffered against the Redskins.

Update: Brian Westbrook Returns To Practice

Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News reports that Eagles running back Brian Westbrook participated in Thursday’s practice.

Coach Andy Reid said yesterday that he held Westbrook out of practice because the session was indoors and he did not want to aggravate Westbrook’s ankle issues. Reid said the decision was not related to Westbrook’s concussion.

There is currently no word regarding if Westbrook will play in Sunday’s game at San Diego.

Update: Brian Westbrook Sits Out Wednesday Practice

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Eagles blog, Bird’s Eye View, reports that oft-injured running back Brian Westbrook will miss the team’s practice on Wednesday due to soreness in his surgically repaired right ankle.

While this is certainly an inauspicious sign for Westbrook, especially considering that he sat out the team’s last game against the Cowboys while he recovered from the concussion he suffered the week prior, there may not be too much reason for worry. As the Inquirer explains, the Eagles are practicing indoors on Wednesday, and Westbrook has a history of sitting out practices on astroturf. We’ll continue to monitor his status throughout the week.

Update: Brian Westbrook Reaggravates Ankle Injury, May Miss Practice

How do you know you might be redefining the concept of “injury-prone”? Answer: when you reaggravate an old injury while sitting out to heal from another injury. The Philadelphia Daily News’ blog, Eagletarian, reports that Westbrook has been receiving treatment on his surgically repaired right ankle. Despite this, Eagles head coach Andy Reid said he expects Westbrook to practice on Wednesday.

While this may be nothing more than a minor setback, it’s certainly discouraging that Westbrook’s old injury flared up when he wasn’t even playing. Expect Westbrook to continue to be a fixture on the injury report.

Update: Westbrook Not Expected To Play Vs. Cowboys After All

In a surprise move, it’s been decided that Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will sit out Week 9 after all. From Pro Football Talk:

After Eagles running back Brian Westbrook sat out practice on Friday, word was it was only precautionary and that he’d play against the Cowboys on Sunday night.

Something appears to have changed in the last 40-odd hours, because Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Westbrook, listed as questionable, will sit out for a second straight week because of the concussion he suffered against the Redskins.

Update: Westbrook 'Good To Go' Sunday

After missing Week 7 because of a concussion he suffered against the Redskins, Brian Westbrook is cleared to play this week against Dallas.

Brian Westbrook is practicing today, as the Eagles prepare to host the Dallas Cowboys, and is "good to go" for Sunday, "unless there"s a setback here," Andy Reid said Wednesday.

[...]

Reid said he believes Westbrook's concussion is "a freak thing" and not indicative of any sort of descent into constant injury worries. "I thought he was as good as I've ever seen him" before Westbrook ran into London Fletcher's knee, Reid said. He joked that Westbrook's head generally collides with defenders' shins, but in this instance, "the two shortest guys on the field" ran into each other.

Westbrook called the concussion "a fluke thing," and said that while he worries about the effects of such an injury many years in the future, he can't be thinking about it when he takes the field against the Cowboys.

"You have to go out there and play worry-free football," he said.

The NFL: where jokes about brain injuries are A-OK.

Update: Brian Westbrook Will Practice Wednesday

From SBN’s Bleeding Green Nation:

Westbrook “did exercise and he’s going to exercise again today,” Reid said. "He felt good during the exercise when he did it this past weekend. One of the days he woke up with a slight headache, Saturday morning, but it wasn’t anything to worry too much about. He’s feeling pretty good and we’ll see how he does here the closer we get to Wednesday.

“He’s not going to do contact, which is not unusual for what we do as a team out there. We’ll just see how he feels, he’ll go through a normal practice … We’re going to be cautious anyway. We’re going to make sure that he’s okay to perform and we’re not going to do anything to put him in jeopardy.”

After handling the Giants with ease without Westbrook last Sunday, Philly has another huge divisional game in Week 9 against the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

Update: Westbrook Inactive For Sunday's Game

It’s been confirmed that Brian Westbrook will not play Sunday’s game against the Giants. LeSean McCoy will start at running back in his place.

Update: Brian Westbrook Sits Out Friday Practice

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Eagles running back Brian Westbrook was on the sidelines for the team’s practice on Friday.

After suffering a severe concussion during last week’s win over the Redskins, Westbrook has been described as a “game-time decision” for the Eagles in Week 8. Although Westbrook has a history of playing despite not practicing, it’s difficult to imagine that he’ll be back on the field after such a devastating injury without working his way back on the practice field first. We’ll keep you posted on any further developments.

Update: Westbrook Is A Game Time Decision

Brian Westbrook, despite suffering a concussion Monday night, which, remember, is described as an injury to your brain, is still being considered a game time decision for Sunday.

Test are still being conducted on Brian Westbrook, who suffered a concussion Monday night, and a decision as to whether he can play Sunday against the Giants will be a game time decision, Eagles coach Andy Reid said.

Update: Brian Westbrook Suffered Severe Concussion

Andy Reid says he is “counting on” Brian Westbrook playing this Sunday against the Giants. Science says otherwise.

Westbrook was knocked unconscious by Londer Fletcher’s knee on Monday night and doesn’t remember the hit at all. Both are signs than the running back suffered a severe — or Grade 3 — concussion.

“If he was unconscious he is probably out at least a few weeks,” [former Eagles and Flyers team physician Art] Bartolozzi said. “Amnesia means the hard drive has been shaken. The brain is like a computer. If you lose data, it tells you something is wrong with the computer.”

Bartolozzi said it’s also difficult for players to retain their fitness level after they have a concussion.

“One of the things that happens with a head injury is that unlike other parts of the body, exercise does not help the recovery,” Bartolozzi said. “It’s tough to maintain the fitness because the brain doesn’t like a lot of conditioning exercises.”

So, essentially, he suffered a Tim Tebow-esque concussion. Anything less than several weeks off would be endangering Westbrook’s brain.

If Westbrook cannot play, rookie LeSean McCoy will start in his place. McCoy has shown glimpses of potential when he's been on the field, but overall, hasn't been very effective -- he's averaged 2.5 YPC in his last three games. He is also a liability in pass blocking schemes.

Update: Andy Reid Says Westbrook 'Feeling Pretty Good'

While we wait to find out the exact status of Brian Westbrook for Sunday’s huge game against the Giants, here’s what head coach Andy Reid was saying about the concussion following Monday night’s win over the Redskins:

“We saw the knee hit the head,” Reid said at his postgame news conference. "I think he’s going to be all right. DeSean [Jackson] has a foot sprain. He’s going to be all right. He came back and played.

“We have to see how Westbrook does with the concussion. He’s feeling pretty good right now. … I know he was looking forward to this game here, what we had planned for him,” Reid said of Westbrook, whose brother Byron is a cornerback for the Redskins.

Reid expressed confidence in rookie running back LeSean McCoy, if Westbrook can’t play Sunday against the Giants.

As is protocol in the NFL, we can certainly expect Westbrook to be rushed back into the line-up before his brain has had proper time to heal. Don’t worry — the side effects won’t kick in for at least another 10 years.

Brian Westbrook Leaves Redskins Game With Concussion

Bad news for the Eagles, but it looked even worse: Brian Westbrook left tonight's game with a concussion after taking a knee to the side of the head from Redskins linebacker London Fletcher. Redskins Blog writer Matt Terl has confirmed that the injury is indeed a concussion, and that Westbrook will not return tonight.
