Early Tuesday morning, NBA Hall-of-Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar announced that he has a form of cancer, having been diagnosed nearly a year ago. From People Magazine:
“Having lost one of my closest friends to a different, highly aggressive form of leukemia, I knew how serious my diagnosis was,” said Abdul-Jabbar, 62. “My own life expectancy became a question mark.”
“I’m telling my story to encourage fellow patients to take charge of their health,” he said. “Work closely with your doctor, monitor your disease and, above all, take your medicine.”
The exact diagnosis for Kareem is “Chronic Myeloid Leukemia,” and with treatment, he’s expected to make a full recovery, which is pretty awesome news. Jabbar is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points and an assistant with the L.A. Lakers, but who are we kidding? He’s best known for this:
Roger, Roger. What’s our vector, Victor? Oh, and get well soon, Kareem. We're pullin for ya.
