Capitals and Islanders Go 11 Rounds of Shootout to Decide Winner

The Washington Capitals and New York Islanders went 11 rounds deep in the shootout tonight with the Capitals finally scoring the winner.  Chris Clark put one by Dwayne Roloson for the winner.  Both Roloson and Simyon Varlamov were absolutely outstanding in the shootout, allowing one goal each through 10 rounds.

Japers' Rink offered 10 thoughts on the remarkable game.  The best part is that Varlamov came in in relief for Jose Theodore which may have been to his advantage.

Varlamov is now 2-0-0/0.96/.957 in three career relief appearances.  There might just be something to this "he's at his best when he's thrown in to a situation unexpectedly" school of thought.

NHL Commish Gary Bettman was in attendance at the game and appeared to be really enjoying the lengthy shootout.  And while this shootout was lengthy, it wasn't as long as the longest one in NHL history.  That honor goes to a 15-round epic between the Caps and New York Rangers that was ended on a fantastic between the legs move by Marek Malik.
