Start Em!
Quarterbacks
Mark Sanchez: Sanchez has shown he is inconsistent, but at home against a bad Jacksonville pass defense coming off a bye I believe he can have a solid game. It helps that Jerricho Cotchery is healed up. Add him to Braylon Edwards and Dustin Keller and Sanchez has a decent amount of weapons.
Brett Favre: Yes, this is a bit of a no-brainer, but you could be thinking that we may just see Purple Jesus doing his thing over and over until the Lions are a puddle of nothing, but Favre has shown that he still has it and Detroit is actually a little worse statistically at defending the pass than defending the run. It should be a balanced attack, just hope they don’t get up by 30 by halftime.
Running Backs
Ricky Williams: He’s still got it and Tampa Bay doesn’t, at least on defense. We should see a heavy dose of Williams and Brown with each getting enough stats to be worth a start. Take every running back in a good rushing offense against the third worst rushing defense.
Jamaal Charles: I’ve been hearing a lot about Kolby Smith, but I think Charles is the superior runner, and that will show against Oakland. If you are in a ppr league he is a must start. Smith may get the goal line carries, but Charles will be more productive.
Wide Receivers
Jerricho Cotchery: Football Outsiders has the Jaguars as the worst pass defense against #2 wide receivers. Add to that Cotchery should be healed up and Braylon Edwards has looked good enough to draw safety help and you have a recipe for a nice game.
Percy Harvin: Detroit’s pass defense is horrid. I’d start Berrian and Rice as well. I believe Harvin will get his chances and that’s all he needs to break a big one.
Sit Down!
Quarterbacks:
David Garrard: This also may be a no-brainer, but Garrard can give you a good fantasy game every other game, but it doesn’t look like he has any chance against the Jets. His best receiver will be matched up with Darelle Revis and Garrard has thrown a total of zero touchdown passes on the road this season.
Matt Ryan: Ryan has been in interception mode as of late and going against a tough Carolina pass defense isn’t going help that trend. Michael Turner should be able to pound the rock all day while Ryan sits back and watches.
Running Backs
Kevin Smith: Smith has been banged up recently and facing the Minnesota defensive line isn’t going to help him any. I had high hopes for Smith this year, but he just doesn’t seem right and he’s not going to get right against Minnesota.
Cedric Benson: Do you sit him if your other running backs are time share backs? No, but Benson is going up against the best run defense in the league in their home stadium. Benson has been too good this year to just sit out of hand, but if you have better options, go for it.
Wide Receivers
Mike Sims-Walker: Like I said while discussing David Garrard’s ineptitude, Darelle Revis should be covering Sims-Walker, couple that with Garrard’s zero touchdown passes on the road and it is hard to start him in New York.
Jeremy Maclin: The Chargers have been tough on #2 receivers this year and with the Eagles traveling across country they might not be sharp, and a dull McNabb makes for a dull passing game.
Start
Brett Favre, QB MIN - I try to stay away from the obvious ones, but Favre is coming off a bye week and getting a defense that has already allowed four 300+ yard passing performances this season. It is entirely possible that the Lions will get a healthy dose of the Vikings rushing attack, but Favre should be able to pass for yards in chunks against the Lions this week. Even a modest showing from Favre will likely net you 200 yards and a couple touchdowns.
Laurence Maroney. RB NE - The Colts are allowing over a hundred yards on the ground per game this season and Maroney has been playing well lately. He got 20 carries for 82 yards last week against Miami and has three touchdowns in his last three games. What I think makes Maroney even more attractive is that smart teams run against Indianapolis to keep Peyton Manning on the sideline as much as possible. The Patriots are a smart team. Look for Maroney to get more than 20 carries on Sunday.
Devin Hester, WR CHI - In his first full season as the "man" on the outside for the Bears, Hester only has two games where he failed to get at least 75 yards receiving. With Cutler under center, you know that offense is capable of moving the ball through the air. The 49ers have a stingy run defense, so Cutler will use that as an excuse to air it out in the Thursday night game. In leagues where you can get points for return yards, Hester is invaluable.
Kellen Winslow, TE TB - The Dolphins struggle mightily against tight ends. Dallas Clark, Tony Gonzalez, Dustin Keller and Jeremy Shockey all had good fantasy days against this defense. Also helping things is the fact that Josh Freeman seems to have decided that he is going to get the ball to Winslow. Look for a good day from the former Hurricane returning to his old stomping grounds.
Arizona Cardinals, DEF - Maybe it is because I have been playing with the Cardinals a lot recently on Madden, but I have a very good feeling about this unit these days. The safeties are playing at a very high level, and between Darnell Dockett and Karlos Dansby, this defense seems capable of wreaking havoc at each level. The Seahawks are not a terrible offense, but it all hinges on Matt Hasselbeck doing it all by himself. The Cards will not let that happen in this divisional matchup.
Sit
Carson Palmer, QB CIN - I never thought I would put him here, but I am doing it more because I think this will be a low-scoring affair with the difference being the ground attack of the Bengals. The Steelers defense is simply nasty. Opposing quarterbacks have struggled recently against this unit that has Troy Polamalu back healthy. Expect Palmer to be held in check this week.
Kevin Smith, RB DET - Any running back that goes up against the Vikings defensive line is a "Sit" recommendation. Smith will not find a lot of running room against the Williams' brothers though I do expect he will collect some receiving yards in the process of Stafford running for his life. Give Smith the week off and hope he stays healthy--his matchups improve down the stretch.
Santana Moss, WR WAS - Moss has been a disappointment all season, with the quarterback and offensive line struggling to give the passing game any help at all. What's worse, he will find himself locked up against Champ Bailey. Even if you think Champ has lost a step, he knows the lay of the land in D.C. and he will be looking to have a big day against his former team.
Tony Scheffler, TE DEN - The Redskins defense has handled tight ends well all season. Tony Gonzalez managed 5 catches for 41 yards and a touchdown against them--but that represents the best game an opposing tight end has had against them. If you have another tight end, I suggest you use him.
Green Bay Packers, DEF - I had to make them a "Sit" recommendation. I have been advising you to start them all season and it has pretty much backfired every time. They have not fulfilled the promise I saw in them this preseason when they manufactured turnovers and interceptions with ease and at will. Their matchup against the Cowboys does not look great, as Romo is really starting to get hot.
You'll note this week we are a couple of days early on our Start/Sit advice. That's because this week launches the start of Thursday night games. Just in case you missed it on the schedule, from here on out, you'll want to get your line-ups in place earlier in the week. This week it's Chicago in San Francisco on Thursday night.
With Larry Johnson out of Kansas City, does he have any fantasy value left? Many teams are struggling at running back, but most have made it clear that they have no interest in LJ. The big story this week was Johnson's desire to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Larry Johnson is exactly the type of player the Steelers want no part of. Pittsburgh is a team of integrity and character, neither of which the disgraced RB has ever shown.
To answer the initial question, it would depend on where LJ ends up this season. One team that could desperately use him, to the point of overlooking his flaws, is Seattle. Julius Jones is simply not capable of getting the job done. Although, given the Seahawks offensive line woes, I doubt LJ would fare much better in the Pacific Northwest. And after his gay slurs, the community would not stand for his presence there either.
Another rumor has the Washington Redskins interested, which probably comes as no surprise given the God awful ownership in D.C., but current back-up RB, Ladell Betts is the same type of bruising back Johnson is. It would be a mistake to bring LJ on.
If Johnson has any real value left, it may be next season when he can get on the field with a new team and a fresh start, but with something to prove. That said, who knows where or if he'll find another starting gig anywhere in the NFL.
Back to the week at hand...
Only the New York Giants and Houston Texans are on a bye in this final week of breaks. These are the guys we'll miss in week 10:
QBs - Eli Manning and Matt Schaub
RBs - Brandon Jacobs, Ryan Moats, Steve Slaton and Ahmad Bradshaw
WRs - Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks, Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter
TEs - Kevin Boss
--Plug and Play Options for Week 10 --
--Quarterbacks--
Chad Henne, MIA - Against the Tampa defense he should get 2 - 3 scores with his arm. It may be his best fantasy game this season.
Brett Favre, MIN - He has a sweet match-up this week against the Lions.
Alex Smith, SFO - I like Smith's chances to get into a shoot-out with Chicago Thursday night. He could put up three TDs.
--Running Backs--
Ladell Betts, WAS - On paper it's not an ideal match-up against the Broncos rush defense, but Rashard Mendenhall tagged them for 155 yards Monday night.
Jamaal Charles, KCC - Charles gets to feast on the Raiders rush defense that gave up about 1000 yards to the Jets a couple of weeks ago.
"Beanie" Wells/Tim Hightower, ARI - Wells and Hightower get to punish the Seahawks in Arizona this weekend.
--Wide Receivers--
Chaz Shilens, OAK - After teasing us for weeks, Shilens should play this week against a porous Chiefs secondary
Greg Camarillo, MIA - Camarillo is a lesser version of Wes Welker, but he has been looking solid lately, and this week he faces the Buccaneers secondary.
Terrell Owens/Lee Evans, BUF - Most owners have been benching these guys. They have been fantasy black holes this season. However, they face the league's worst pass defense in the Titans this week. (Owens has a strained hip, keep an eye on his status).
--Tight Ends--
Brandon Pettigrew, DET- The Vikings are the leagues worst vs. the TE position and Pettigrew is Stafford's favorite target.
Jeff King/Gary Barnridge, CAR - If you're hurting at TE, Carolina faces a poor Falcons defense against the TE position. One of these guys should score this week.
Bo Scaife, TEN - The Bills aren't very good at protecting against the TE spot, so Scaife provides a nice outlet for screens from Vince Young.
--Week Ten - Start and Sit--
Generally, I always recommend starting your top picks, regardless of match-ups, barring injury, of course. It is obvious that you'll almost always play guys like Andre Johnson, Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning. I try to save this list for guys who are not always obvious starts.
Note: While I'm not saying sit Tom Brady this week, he has a tough match-up against the Colts.

Drew Brees, NOS vs. STL - Fantasy owners have to be drooling over this week's match up. The #1 QB vs. the 23rd ranked defense vs. the QB position. |
Chris Johnson, TEN vs. BUF - Johnson has 4 of his 7 touchdowns in his last two games. He is now 2nd among RBs in fantasy scoring, and 1st in yardage. |
Larry Fitzgerald, ARI vs. SEA - Fitz had two scores last week against the Bears and I think he'll make it two weeks in a row with a deuce. Especially at home. |
Antonio Gates, SDC vs. PHI - Only Minnesota is worse vs. the TE position than the Eagles. No one is better at the TE position than Gates. |

CBS Sports Start/Sit For Week 10
More start/sit. Besides, isn’t that what it’s all about? The guys we choose for the active roster each week are the cause for joy or consternation. So we believe there’s never enough start/sit advice.
