Mike Lupica spent nearly 1000 words talking about himself, Matthew DeBord wrote a column about Michelle Wie with some facts missing, and a piece titled "Hideki Matsui: An Ageless Talent" was featured, written by ... Matsui's agent.â†µ
A quick look at the site as of 11 a.m. this morning on Day 2 gives you an idea of what to expect: a huge picture of Mike Tyson with the headline, "NOT AGAIN," followed by the story's tease: "Photographer Claims Blood Spilled 'Like A Water Fountain.'" Below that, some of the top features include Ochocinco's latest prank, Agassi's appearance on Letterman, Bill Simmons on Kimmel promoting his book, and the Tony Gonzalez Peta ad -- superficial stories that are relevant only in a unique fringe-world where sports and entertainment co-exist. Scores, analysis and and actual sports news seem pretty hard to come by.
And the other -- possibly most important -- piece is HuffPo's ability to latch onto the most popular memes in sports on any given day and inserting itself in the middle of them: The topics that transcend avid sports fans and appeal either to the casual fan or the non-fan (the recent women's soccer thing comes to mind). The site currently leads with Sammy Sosa's freakish face, which was No. 1 on Google Trends on Monday.â†µ
