Week 11 NCAA Football Buffet: Previewing All The Games Worth Consuming
The BCS Bowl picture could be a lot clearer after this weekend, especially in the Big Ten, MWC and Big East. Let's find out what looks tasty and what might be worth pushing to the side of your plate in this weekend's college football buffet. (All times are Eastern.)
GIVE ME A HEAPING HELPING
No. 16 Utah @ No. 4 TCU (CBS College Sports, 7:30pm) - Last year the Salt Lake Tribune headline read "Biggest Game Ever," when TCU and Utah met. This season may be even bigger. The Utes get to play the rare role of spoiler to another BCS-buster. TCU's already lost in the uniform department. Yikes.
No. 15 Iowa @ No. 10 Ohio State (ABC/ESPN, 3:30pm) - Who's got a "better" offense, Iowa or Ohio State? With the injury to Ricky Stanzi, Terrelle Pryor should be the X-factor in this one. Will he follow up his performance from last week or will he choke the Big Ten title away? Winner goes Rose Bowlin' (probably).
I'LL HAVE A SCOOP OF THAT, PLEASE
No. 25 Stanford @ No. 11 USC (FSN, 3:30pm) - Need some reasoning to put with USC's "down" season? Look no further than their "weak" 2006 recruiting class. I'm sure Stanford feels terrible about all of that.
Idaho @ No. 6 Boise State (ESPNU, 3:30pm) - While Boise fans ponder whether or not they're jumping ship to the MWC whilst deciding how much BSU stock to pick up, they'd be wise not to overlook the frisky 7-3 Vandals.
No. 1 Florida @ South Carolina (CBS, 3:30pm) - This match-up stirs up the age-old Spurrier or Urban debate (Answer: Urban). Meyer's boys aren't winning too pretty these days, but then again who ever said that's what made a championship?
West Virginia @ No. 5 Cincinnati (ESPN2, Friday, 8pm) - It might not matter which QB Cincy throws out there but it will be Collaros getting the start for the Bearcats and their high-octane offense. West Virginia fans better hope Bill Stewart wakes up in time to give Noel Devine enough carries this week. Oh and if you're going to the game...watch out for those Viking attacks!
I'LL TASTE IT FIRST...
Arizona State @ No. 14 Oregon (ESPN, 10:15pm) - LeGarrette Blount, welcome back. We haven't missed you. ASU is dealing with a suspension of their own while the Ducks are trying not to remember what happened the last time the Sun Devils came to town.
Notre Dame @ No. 8 Pittsburgh (ABC, 8pm) - A funny thing happened on the way to Heinz Field in Week 11...Notre Dame didn't become the BCS-sure thing they were supposed to. Now they're facing a top-ranked Panther team with Charlie Weis' job hanging in the delicate balance. That's right, Dave Wannstedt holds Weis' future in his mustache.
No. 18 Arizona @ California (Versus, 7pm) - One team in this game is dreaming of a possible Rose Bowl berth and it isn't Cal. These two teams have a history of putting points on the board so it should be a good one.
Texas Tech @ No. 17 Oklahoma State (ABC, 8pm) - Last year? Huge game. This year? Not so much. The Raiders are hoping the bye week works for their advantage.
Auburn @ Georgia (ESPN2, 7pm) - Georgia may be down but they're still gunning for a bowl game. If history is any judge, this one might not work out for them. The Tigers have a way of winning in Athens.
Washington @ Oregon State (FSN Northwest, 3:30pm) - All that goodwill the Huskies built up at the beginning of the season seems to be evaporating. Oregon State seems primed to thump U-Dub so that trend might continue.
No. 12 Miami @ North Carolina (ABC/ESPN, 3:30pm) - As you can imagine, UNC fans have pretty much stopped caring about FB. Miami is one of the schools trying these new-fangled Nike uniforms and while they look weird, at least they're cleaner than the throw-up the U usually wears.
No. 7 Georgia Tech @ Duke (ESPN2, Noon )- If Duke wins, the odds go up dramatically that Duke football will get its very own blogger.
Tennessee @ Mississippi (CBS, Noon) - So...Tennessee's had an interesting week so far. The whole absurd affair should give Ole Miss fans some ideas for a new gameday song. Oh by the way, remember when Ole Miss was a darkhorse national title contender? Me either.
I'LL KEEP THAT IN MIND FOR THE NEXT TRIP
Texas A&M @ Oklahoma (FSN, 7pm) - A bad season just continues to get worse for the crimson and cream as injuries pile up. The Aggies have turned things around lately and a win here could go a long way for the program, not to mention a bowl berth.
Missouri @ Kansas State (Versus, 12:30pm) - The unholy alliance forged by hatred for all things Jawhawk will be suspended this weekend. Somehow, KSU is the team in charge of the Big 12 North while the Tigers are the ones just getting by.
No. 24 Clemson @ North Carolina State (Raycom, Noon) - So apparently Clemson's kinda good again. Maybe. It's a battle of who could care less when the mostly-dead Wolfpack host this weekend.
No. 2 Texas @ Baylor (FSN, Noon) - You know why Texas has been so vanilla this season? It's not their fault, it's because they haven't had any true "villains" on the schedule. Baylor certainly doesn't fit the mold either.
Michigan State @ Purdue (ESPN, Noon) - Statiscially, Michigan State boasts the best offense in the Big Ten. How did this happen? And all the while they did it while also creating a quarterback controversy. Bravo, sirs.
I DON'T KNOW...SMELLS KINDA FUNNY...
No. 3 Alabama @ Mississippi State (ESPN, 7pm) - Alabama is having one of those "it ain't pretty but we get the job done" seasons. MSU needs to win 2 of its last 3 to make a bowl...me thinks they can write this one off.
Boston College @ Virginia (ESPN360, 3:30pm) - There are many bowls up for grabs in the ACC but the Emerald seems the most likely destination for the Eagles. Even if they finish strong, the Gator certainly won't be interested.
Nebraska @ Kansas (ABC, 3:30pm) - Nebraska's offense - Just like having a sick 2-year old! In the Tale of the Tape, this one is going to be Kansas' offense versus Nebraska's defense.
Michigan @ No. 21 Wisconsin (BTN, Noon) - Some Michigan fans are doing the Fire RichRod Dance and others are asking for a little more patience. Wolverine fans are starting to realize that maybe DC Scott Shafer wasn't the problem last year. As for the Badgers, it's a foregone conclusion they're finishing fourth in the Big Ten.
Indiana @ No. 19 Penn State (BTN, Noon) - I know it seems crazy but Penn State's BCS hopes aren't dead just yet. Indiana's on the other hand...very much so.
No. 13 Houston @ Central Florida (CBS College Sports, Noon) - Houston possesses one of the worst defenses in the country, but have managed to win 8 of their first 9 games. The reason? Case Keenum.
Northwestern @ Illinois (ESPN Classic, Noon) - The Wildcats lost to Syracuse earlier this year and beat undefeated Iowa last weekend. Go figure. This time it's personal though...they're playing for the Land of Lincoln Trophy, which is...a hat. Oh.
Florida State @ Wake Forest (ESPNU, Noon) - Demon Deacon fans are going to black-out the stadium for this one. Good idea, as it will only serve to confuse Bobby Bowden further. He's already got enough to deal with as QB Christian Ponder is out.
NO THANKS, PLATE'S FULL
Louisville @ Syracuse (Big East Network, Noon) - It's the Big East Basement Bowl! Louisville fans are counting the games until Steve Kragthorpe is fired. Considering he's the only Big East coach to lose to the Orange twice, SU fans are petitioning to make him stay.
Kentucky @ Vanderbilt (SEC Network, Noon) - The two worst teams in the SEC square off this weekend. Kentucky gets the advantage, if for no other reason that Vanderbilt is so bad on offense that it's unlikely their defense can bail them out against an SEC team. Plus, the Wildcats are playing for a bowl berth.
Troy @ Arkansas (SEC Network, 7:30pm) - Did Troy coach Larry Blakeney tell an AM radio host last summer that his Trojans would beat the Hogs or not? That's the great controversy of our day. Well, at least it provides something for the rest of us to invest in for this otherwise bland game.
Louisiana Tech @ No. 9 LSU (ESPNU, 7pm) - The Tigers get a light snack this weekend and a chance to lick their wounds from the Alabama loss. They'll have to make due without DE Greg Hardy who is out for the rest of the season.
UCLA @ Washington State (FCS Pacific, 5pm) - UCLA is looking to deal with it's case of fumblitis with a change at the running back position. The Cougars have to be asking themselves a lot of questions about this season, where their depth went is just the tip of the iceberg.
No. 22 Brigham Young @ New Mexico (MTN, 2pm) - BYU QB Max Hall completed 20 of 22 passes for 312 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in a little more than two quarters last week. He'll look to match that this week.
No. 20 Virginia Tech @ Maryland (ESPN360, 1pm) - The Hokies are looking for answers on the road. The Terrapins are just happy basketball season is here. I see a compromise in their futures.
South Dakota State @ Minnesota (BTN, Noon) - If the Gopher football team loses versus South Dakota State on Saturday, there will inevitably be an emotional tidal wave of irrational exuberance demanding a new head coach. How bout Erin Andrews?
