LeBron James has always said that he chose the No. 23 to honor Michael Jordan. Now it looks like he's going to stop wearing it for the exact same reason. After tonight's game against the Heat, with MJ in attendance, LeBron dropped this:
"I think no guy in the NBA should ever wear 23…[Jordan] can’t get the NBA logo, much respect to Jerry West, so I think his number shouldn’t be worn by any player in the NBA so I’m thinking about just changing my number next year just to show the tribute of what he did for the game."
The purist in me is saying "Smart move!" LeBron is realizing that while he might pass Jordan statistically, he's probably never measure up historically. Better off separating himself from MJ as much as possible and own his legacy completely.
The cynic in me is saying "Genius!" LeBron just ensured himself a mega-increase in merchandising sales next year even if he stays with the Cavs. The run on No. 6 jerseys will shatter records whle No. 23 jerseys will become collector's items.
