Rob Bironas booted a 53-yard field goal with 47 seconds remaining and Kris Brown missed a potential tying kick for a second straight game as Tennessee continued its resurgence with a 20-17 victory over the Houston Texans.
Vince Young connected on 12-of-22 passes for 116 yards with a score and also ran for 73 yards for the Titans (4-6), who are making a remarkable turnaround after beginning the season with six consecutive defeats. Chris Johnson rushed 29 times for 151 yards and Kenny Britt caught a touchdown pass.
Bironas, who kicked an NFL-record eight field goals during a 38-36 Titans win over the Texans on October 21, 2007 at Reliant Stadium, put the visitors ahead with his second kick of at least 50 yards in the second half.
Young and the Titans’ offense then watched as Matt Schaub moved the Texans (5-5) into field goal range. Brown, who missed wide left on the final play of a 20-17 loss two weeks ago at Indianapolis, was again off the mark to the same side from 49 yards away with a second remaining.
Schaub completed 25-of-39 passes for 305 yards with a pair of scores for Houston, which will host the unbeaten Colts on Sunday.
It was the 100th regular season win in the Titans’ era (1999-09). They next have a home game against Arizona before facing the Colts in Indianapolis on December 6.
