Jay Cutler Regressing, Taking Devin Hester WIth Him

Chicago QB Jay Cutler has been maddening for fantasy owners. Some weeks he’s a TD machine, others he’s a TO machine, as in tunrover. Over the last five weeks though, Cutler has had only one good game, compared to four partial or complete duds. He, and the Bears offense, are clearly regressing. And owners of Devin Hester, plus the other Bears receiving targets, have to be very concerned. Cutler missed a wide-open Hester for a TD opportunity on Sunday, plus, Hester became the butt of many Internet jokes this week. (See that, I just made a joke out of that, if awful puns count as jokes.)

But Cutler’s recent play is no laughing matter for fantasy owners who have Bears on the roster. Cutler is but one of many disappointments listed in this FOX Sports article.

This seems like backwards thinking

We shouldn’t let the fact that Cutler missed Hester one play obscure the larger reality that Hester is a very below-average wideout, and whoever the Bears line up on the other side—Knox? Aromashodu? Bennett?—is scarcely better.

This isn’t to say Cutler’s a product of his previous system or anything, but it’s a lot easier to look like a good quarterback when you’re throwing to Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, and Tony Scheffler instead of Greg Olsen and a strong contender for the worst WR corps in the league. Saying Cutler is “taking Hester with him” is like Leo DiCaprio sank and took the Titanic with him.
