Al Groh Finds Work: Georgia Tech Hires Ex-UVA Coach

Reports indicate that Al Groh will be the new defensive coordinator for Georgia Tech. Groh will replace Dave Wommack, who was fired last week following a 24-14 loss to Iowa in the Orange Bowl.

Groh was fired as head coach of UVA in November following a 3-9 season. On Wednesday, Groh interviewed for the Miami Dolphins coordinator opening, but apparently opted to stay in the collegiate ranks.

Virginia To Introduce Richmond's Mike London As New Head Coach Coach

In a press conference Monday at 1:00 p.m., Virginia is set to announce the new head coach of their football team, and he won't have to travel very far: it's Richmond's Mike London. Seemingly, the Cavaliers were just waiting for Richmond's season to end so they could hire away London, and on Saturday, the Spiders obliged, falling 35-31 Appalachian State in the FCS Playoffs.

The courtship was a brief one.

Yesterday morning, following the Spiders' loss to Appalachian State, Virginia officials formally requested permission from Richmond to speak to the Spiders' head coach, a request that was granted. Prior to that, all discussions had gone through a third-party search firm that the Cavs hired to assist with the process. [...]

For the Cavs, there was little that stood in their way. The Associated Press reported yesterday that Memphis, Western Kentucky and Akron were also interested in the coach, though it seemed unlikely that those schools could compete with a BCS-conference school in which London has family ties.

In addition to his time as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, London's brother Paul was a defensive back under George Welsh, and his daughter Kristen played basketball for the Cavs ... Working at Richmond, London had to recruit under similar academic circumstances to those at Virginia. He has maintained strong relations with state high-school coaches, an area where Virginia has lost ground in recruiting.

London, who won the 2008 FCS National Championship in just his first year at Richmond, is expected to make as much as four times what he was making with the Spiders.

UVA's in-state rivals, Virginia Tech, is already wary, as detailed by SB Nation's Gobbler Country.

London is the kind of young, energetic coach with local ties who can compete with Tech's coaches for the Commonwealth's top talent. He was UVa's recruiting coordinator for three years and its defensive coordinator for two before going to Richmond and winning the NCAA Division 1 national title in his first year with the Spiders.

London becomes just the second minority head coach of a BCS school, joining Miami's Randy Shannon.

Amidst 3-9 Record, Virginia Head Coach Al Groh Fired After Nine Years

The University of Virgina announced Sunday that it would be looking for a new head coach for its football program after they dismissed Coach Al Groh after 9 years at the program. Our own Spencer Hall had this to say about the move:

In the least exciting or intriguing firing of the hatchet season, Al Groh was dismissed as head coach of the UVA Cavaliers today after three losing seasons in the last four and the worst of his coaching career this season, a 3-9 2009 season more boring than even your usual UVA season. Groh capped his 59-53 career by reading a poem called "The Man In The Glass" at his press conference, and even that is far less interesting than it sounds on paper. In case you can’t tell, I think Al Groh was the most boring coach in the history of all boring coaches, and that is a special kind of boring.

But beyond his mundane exterior, Groh was actually a pretty serviceable coach during his time at UVA. He leaves as the school's second-winningest coach, having won ACC Coach of the Year twice. All things considered, and this year's loss to (gasp) William and Mary notwithstanding, that's a pretty solid legacy. On Sunday, he released a brief statement:

"I feel very fortunate," Groh said in a statement. "I am an ordinary guy who has been lucky to have been around some extraordinary players and coaches who put me in a position to enjoy many fulfilling games and seasons -- and that's the truth. I gave everything I had to the position and to each game."

Now, UVA turns its attention to a coaching search. Of the search, we go again to Spencer Hall:

Likely suspects with UVA ties include Richmond coach Mike London, Temple coach Al Golden, and Louisiana Tech’s Derek Dooley. Boise State’s Chris Petersen and former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville are also in the shuffle, but you wanted a pony for Christmas and never got one, right?

We'll keep you updated on the search as it takes shape.
