Jake Delhomme Placed On IR

Jake’s Delhomme season is finished. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Panthers will place Delhomme on IR after he was unable to throw in practice this week. Delhomme has been out since Week 13 after breaking a finger during a loss to the Jets. Former backup Matt Moore, who has come on in recent weeks, will continue to start for the Panthers.

While this injury may seem to portend the end of Delhomme’s career with the Panthers, that may not be so. Schefter points out that since the team owes Delhomme $13 million next season as part of the extension he signed before the season,it seems more likely than not that he will be back. Whether he would return to the starting lineup is another question though.

Update

Matt Moore Will Start For Panthers At QB On Sunday

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Matt Moore will start in place of the injured Jake Delhomme this Sunday when the Panthers host Tampa Bay.

This move had been expected after Delhomme sat out Wednesday’s practice while Moore received the first team reps. Given Delhomme’s horrific play this year (18 interceptions in 11 games), his injury last week as a bit fortuitous, as it came just as it seemed he was on the verge of being benched.

Original Story

Jake Delhomme Breaks Finger, May Miss Week 13

Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme may finally be headed for the bench, but due to a broken finger rather than his poor play. After posting a 12.7 quarterback rating during the team's 17-6 Week 12 loss to the New York Jets -- a defeat that featured four Delhomme interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown -- the Charlotte Observer reports that Delhomme suffered a broken finger during the game, and may sit out the team's Week 13 game against the Tampa Bay Bucs.

If Delhomme cannot play, backup Matt Moore will get the start for the Panthers, who have most likely been eliminated from playoff contention after their last loss.
