Go West For Fantasy Gold!

Start Them!

Quarterbacks

Alex Smith: He came into the Houston game two weeks ago and looked like a real quarterback by throwing 3 touchdowns to the surging Vernon Davis. He then had a down game against the tough Indianapolis pass defense which happens to most QBs and now he gets a poor Titans pass defense at home. Is he a lock? No, his track record isn’t good enough, but his matchup is great.

Matt Hasselbeck: The last time I recommended him the Seahawks were destroyed by the Cardinals. I just don’t see that happening with a Detroit team that can’t rush the quarterback. If Hasselbeck has time to throw he will tear Detroit apart.

Running Backs

Julius Jones: He hasn’t been very useful this year, but at home against the Lions you have to start him. Justin Forsett may take some of his carries now that Edge is gone, but Jones should still get the bulk for now and against the Lions that is all you need.

Jamal Charles:
Who knows what will happen with Larry Johnson, but we know he is out against the Jaguars and this gives Charles a great chance against a middle of the road defense. The Chiefs aren’t good and you can’t expect a huge game, but Charles has skills and with enough opportunities can break a few.

Wide Receivers

Michael Crabtree: He has quickly become the 49ers #1 wide receiver and he gets to play at home against a poor Titans defense. With Alex Smith looking like he might be able to get him the ball we might see Crabtree’s breakout game.

Mike Thomas: David Garrard is erratic which make his receivers erratic, but the Jags get a bad Chiefs team at home and Mike Thomas led all their receivers in targets last week. He should be a good bye week filler.

Sit Down!

Quarterbacks

Matt Schaub: He’s led you this far and now you want to sit him?! Do you have no loyalty? Well, the good thing is, this is fantasy football, and Schaub doesn’t really care. Do you sit him for any schmo? No! He is good, but the Indy pass D is also very good. He won’t sink your team, but if you need to make up ground sometimes you have to take risks.

Vince Young: The 49ers have had some trouble in the pass defense department, but Vince Young, even though he had a decent first game back, is not safe to play away from home against a good defense.

Running Backs

Rashard Mendenhall and Knowshon Moreno: Denver and Pittsburgh are both top notch rush defenses and I expect to see more passing than running. It’s hard to sit these two, but there is a good chance they will both be bottled up and you may see Buckhalter and Moore in there a lot on passing downs and the no huddle offense.

Matt Forte: He has had a couple good games, but they were against the Lions and the Browns. The Cardinals are a good rush defense and Forte hasn’t been able to find room against good rush defenses.

Wide Receivers

Kevin Walter: He should see more work with Owen Daniels out, but the Colts aren’t the team to run him out there against. Stash him away.

Devery Henderson:
The Panthers are tough against the pass and weak against the run. The Saints will run more than usual which will limit Henderson’s looks. Find a better option.

Talking About Louis Rankin

This week the fantasy buzz has been all about Texans back up running back, Ryan Moats. His ownership in fantasy leagues skyrocketed after waivers went through. Certainly a three touchdown performance and the benching of the team's star RB is bound to make fantasy owners salivate, but how much value does Moats really have?

Before Steve Slaton owners have a stroke that they've lost their first round draft pick, here are a few things to keep in mind. Coach Gary Kubiak benched Slaton to send him a message; hang onto the ball or you'll sit. Moats is a career back-up running back for a reason. He isn't an every game starter. Three touchdowns and 126 yards may seem lofty, but he was playing the league's worst rush defense.

While Moats will see more carries in the second half of the season, as mentioned above, this was a wake up message to Slaton, not a pink slip. Kubiak still believes in his star and he'll be right back out there for the next game against the Colts.

Why am I so sure Slaton isn't out of the starting mix? He's making starter money, and with Owen Daniels out for the season, the Texans will need Slaton's pass catching ability now more than ever. Moats may get into a time share to push Slaton, but I don't see him replacing Slaton as the team's number one back.

--Free Agent Pick-Ups--

This time of the season, new names are hard to come by, but here are a few I think could help in the second half.

Malcom Floyd,WR, SDC - The Chargers parted ways with under productive receiver, Chris Chambers, which opens the door for Malcolm Floyd to get a bigger slice of the pie. Floyd was already starting to turn heads, which is part of the reason the Chargers felt comfortable letting Chambers go. I'd snap him up now if you have the bench space. He'll go off any week now. He's still 80% available in Yahoo leagues, and 96% in ESPN leagues.

David Hawthorne, LB, SEA - A few weeks ago when I was talking about IDP players, I mentioned Hawthorne as Lofa Tatupa's replacement. In his first game starting again, he racked up 8 tackles and 2 sacks. Another monster fantasy day. In two full starts in place of Tatupa, Hawthorne has averaged about 30 fantasy points in most leagues. If you're in an IDP league, grab this guy. He's owned in less than 5% of all leagues.

Louis Rankin, RB, Seattle - The Edge is lost, and Julius Jones never had it. Enter Louis Rankin. The Raiders cut this guy and Seattle's defense has had trouble containing him in practice. Although some might disagree, Louis Rankin has potential. Jones might find his days in the Pacific Northwest gone too.

Back to the week at hand...

The Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, St, Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings are all on a bye this week. Practice those golf swings gentlemen. These are the guys we'll miss in week 9:

QBs - Brett Favre and Mark Sanchez. I can't count these guys and keep a straight face- Marc Bulger, Derek Anderson, Ryan Fitzpatrick and JaMarcus Russell. No one is missing them this week except their opponents.

RBs - Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson, Steven Jackson, Adrian Peterson, Justin Fargas, Thomas Jones, Shonn Greene and Jamal Lewis.

WRs - Lee Evans, Terrell Owens, Mohamed Massaquoi, Bernard Berrian, Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice, Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, and Donnie Avery.

TEs - Vinsanthe Shiancoe, Zach Miller, Daniel Fells, Robert Royal, and Dustin Keller.

--Plug and Play Options for Week 9 --

--Quarterbacks--

David Garrard, JAX - Garrard was unusually silent vs. the Titans last week, but this week he faces the Chiefs secondary that made Miles Austin look like Randy Moss.

Matt Hasselbeck, SEA - Hasselbeck is at home this weekend against a terrible Lions defense. Three TDs are almost a lock.

Alex Smith, SFO - Smith gets his second start against a dreadful Titans secondary. This could be a huge week for Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree, and someone has to throw them the ball.

--Running Backs--

Julius Jones, SEA - It's not often you'll see me push anyone to start Jones, but this week he faces an even weaker rush defense than the Rams team he beat up on in week one. Yes, his last good game. He should hit the century mark this week, if he tries at all.

Jamaal Charles, KCC - Charles will get his first career start in place of Larry Johnson. The one thing that makes him a nice play this week, is he has something to prove, and he's playing the Jaguars.

Chris "Beanie" Wells, ARI - Wells is still highly un-owned in many fantasy leagues, and his second half potential is huge.

--Wide Receivers--

Malcolm Floyd, SDC - I mentioned Floyd above as a second half jewel, and I think this week could be his debutante ball, vs. a poor Giants secondary. I think he'll get 6-8 receptions, close to 100 yards and a score.

Josh Morgan/Isaac Bruce, SFO - Neither name is flashy, and Crabtree and Davis will get the love most weeks, but this week, the Titans secondary makes one or both of these guys worth a spot start. I'd lean towards Morgan as the deep threat.

Bobby Wade/Chris Chambers, KCC - The Jaguars are woeful vs. the pass, and Bowe can't catch all the balls.

Torry Holt/Mike Sims-Walker, JAX - The Chiefs are as bad against the pass as the Jags...

--Tight Ends--

Fred Davis, WAS -  The Falcons are lousy vs. TEs, and Davis showed he is a more than capable replacement for Chris Cooley.

Spencer Havner, GBP - Havner has three TDs in the last two weeks in place of the injured Jermichael Finley. Finley should be out at least one more week, and the Packers face the woeful Buccaneers. The best part for IDP leagues is Havner also qualifies at the linebacker position in most of them. He could make it three weeks straight with a score. The downside, no yards, just endzone catches.

Ben Watson, NEP - Watson's season has been up and down, but the Dolphins Achilles heal so far has been against TE's, to the tune of 500 yards and 3 TDs.

--Week Nine - Start and Sit--

Generally, I always recommend starting your top picks, regardless of match-ups, barring injury, of course. It is obvious that you'll almost always play guys like Larry Fitzgerald, Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning. I try to save this list for guys who are not always obvious starts.

Note: While I'm not saying sit Drew Brees this week, I don't think he'll have a huge day. I expect his defense and running game to get the hard work this week vs. the Panthers.

Week 9 Start/Sit: Charles In Charge

Start

Carson Palmer, QB CIN - Last week I told you to avoid the Ravens defense like it was the plague. This week, I am very high on the Bengals' offense coming off two weeks to prepare for this home game against Baltimore. The Ravens struggle against the air attack on the road, getting beaten up up Tom Brady, Philip Rivers and Brett Favre. I see Palmer building on the 271 yard, one touchdown performance he had against Baltimore in Week 5.

Jamaal Charles, RB KC - You don't need me to tell you to start Chris Johnson or Frank Gore, so here is a start to pay attention to this week. Larry Johnson is burning bridges like a retreating army. Todd Haley is looking at Charles as the possible replacement. He can earn the job if he is able to get off this week and he gets the 25th ranked run defense to do it against. I've liked Jamaal Charles all preseason long. If he is on your roster, you simply have to play him this week. His starting value won't get much better--unless he blows up and becomes the new long-term starting running back for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Michael Crabtree, WR SF - In his first home game for the 49ers, Crabtree faces off against the worst passing defense in the league (Tennessee). His talent is undeniable. Alex Smith will be looking for him all day long. This is the game where you look like a genius for drafting Crabtree and keeping him on your roster all year long.

Fred Davis, TE WAS - YES! A Redskin! I get so few joys in life as a Redskins fan these days...you have to give this one to me. The Redskins passing offense leans heavily on the tight end. After Chris Cooley left the game against the Eagles, Davis came in and got 8 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. He is a pure receiving tight end. Jason Campbell will be looking his way a lot against the Falcons defense.

Green Bay Packers, DEF - I know...they laid an egg against the Vikings and Brett Favre. I continue to believe in these guys and this week they get to face a rookie quarterback in Josh Freeman. The Bucs will be wearing their old-school Creamsicle jerseys this week I am told. I predict Dom Capers and this defense will make the Tampa Bay fans remember well those rough and tumble days. Sacks and turnovers will come in bunches.

Sit

Eli Manning, QB NYG - What has gotten into Eli? Is it just me or he is spending too much time prior to the snap trying to get the perfect play called? He's like Brian Wilson back there. It's an obsession that is killing this offense. He needs to get back to basics. Thank God he has a Super Bowl ring, because otherwise this matchup with Philip Rivers and the team that drafted and traded him could have been the game that destroyed him. He needs to get back on track somehow. I don't think it will be this week.

Ahmad Bradshaw, RB NYG - I am actually not this down on the Giants, but his ankle and foot continue to keep him from breaking out on Sundays the way he is capable of doing. His fumble against the Cardinals two weeks ago was a dagger to the men in blue. His inability to bust loose for the big run these days has devalued him in fantasy for the time being.

Roy E. Williams, WR DAL - Cowboys' fans must be going nuts right now. The receiver they trade away their future for steps right into the space that T.O. left--specifically, calling out Tony Romo and offering excuses for why his production is down. ESPN has been gladly showing the many drops Roy has had this year. Rarely does a receiver follow up a negative week like this with a big performance. And there is nothing to suggest Williams is ready to break out of his funk yet anyway.

Tony Scheffler, TE DEN - I pick on Tony...this is the second week in a row that he is my "Sit" tight end. He had one catch for 9 yards against the Ravens last week. On Monday night, against the Steelers, I don't expect him to enjoy a lot more success than that. Scheffler is a capable player, as evidenced by his Week 6 performance against the Chargers when he went for six catches for 101 yards and a score. But aside from that, he simply has not been a big part of the offense in Denver.

Dallas Cowboys, DEF - I was shocked when the Eagles lit up the Giants the way they did. They racked up yards and points in a very dominating fashion. I am hard-pressed to call the Cowboys defense better than the Giants. The difference in this game may be the Cowboys getting on the scoreboard with their offense. But to win this game, they will have to outscore a very potent offense that looks poised to exploit just about any defense it comes across.
