Update: Fedor Emelianenko Out Four to Six Months

“[The hand injury] could’ve been from that blow when he had Brett on the mat at the end,” Coker said. “We’re hearing he could be out for four to six months.”

Alistair Overeem will headline a Strikeforce card on Showtime early next year, and he is the favorite to be Emelianenko’s next foe, Coker said.

Obviously, the biggest story here is that Fedor is shelved for a big period of time. Strikeforce needs him fighting quickly to capitalize on his big moment and new star power. The longer he is out the closer to a reset button this position becomes.

In addition to that, Overeem headlining a Showtime card would be a pretty big deal considering he is the promotion’s champion. Fedor/Overeem is big from a “sporting” standpoint but from a marketing standpoint it is not exactly a huge fight.

Fedor Emelianenko Breaks Hand, Nose In Strikeforce Victory

Sherdog with the story:

Fedor Emelianenko suffered a broken nose and injured his left hand during his heavyweight bout with Brett Rogers Saturday at Strikeforce/M-1 Global "Fedor vs. Rogers," Sherdog.com has learned from a source close to the fighter's camp.

The nose break isn't an issue worth much concern but the hand breaks remain a major problem for Fedor.  In combat sports hand breaks tend to repeat often due to repeated stress to the same bones that have already broken once and have weakened.  Fedor's style of punching which involves a lot of landing with the thumb and index finger rather than the knuckles of the index/middle finger leads to a lot more injuries.

There is no word yet on how long this will keep Fedor on the shelf but he has been out up to ten months in the past for similar injuries.
