On the brink of college basketball’s opening tonight, some interesting news comes through from Fox Sports’ Jeff Goodman:
Florida International University coach Isiah Thomas plans to coach Monday’s season opener against the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels despite his mother suffering a heart attack on Saturday night.
“She told me to go to work,” Thomas told FOXSports.com.
Thomas spent all day Sunday with his ailing, 85 year-old mother, but now must face the task at hand, the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. And… Wow.
Thomas’ love for his mother, who raised him by herself, is well-documented, and for anyone to consider coaching under these circumstances is pretty daunting. Isiah’s been the punchline of a lot of jokes in the years since his playing days, but for tonight, at least, I think most everyone is sincere in hoping for the best tonight. A tough situation, but Thomas is nothing if not resilient…
