According to this tweet, the Tar Heels are wearing throwbacks that honor the school’s 1957 National Championship team. (Update: Take a gander above.) This is all part of the celebration of 100 years of North Carolina basketball. Hopefully, they don’t have a Tar Heel equivalent of the awful Montreal Canadiens barber pole unis to drag out as part of it.
The odd red and white trim does remind me a bit of this one kid in my Con Law class back when I was a Teaching Assistant in grad school, who chose to honor UNC by wearing a "fashion" cap in NC State colors. It’s a feature that would’ve been far less noticeable back in the day of monochrome media, but it really stands out in our high-def times.
