In last night’s Pacific Division matchup between the Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks, Evgeni Nabokov and Marty Turco combined to stop 75 of 79 shots in a supremely entertaining game between two desperate teams. After the Stars had tied the game at 2-2, it became a duel between the two of the best shootout goaltenders in the NHL, a matchup of great saves and incredible shots as the shootout went eleven rounds, the 6th-longest in NHL history.
Except it was actually pretty boring. Says Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy:
11-round shootout between Dallas and SJ. Yawn.
It was battle of uninspired shots and absolute futility as the two teams combined for just three goals in 22 attempts. The Sharks were foiled four straight times by a Turco poke check; I assume the shooters on the bench just weren’t paying much attention.
The Stars eventually won the game when Matt Niskanen (a defenseman!) snapped a wrist shot over Nabokov’s glove.
