Ware Wants To Play Saturday, But Team Will Be 'Smart About It'

DeMarcus Ware didn't practice on Tuesday, but the Cowboys linebacker still wants to play this Saturday against the Saints. He is expected to undergo another round of tests and X-rays Wednesday, which hopefully should determine whether or not playing with his injury is the "safe and smart choice."

"Tomorrow I think I will do some more X-rays and I think another MRI," Ware said Tuesday. "(We want) to make sure the swelling is down and do some more strength tests to make sure it's alright."

But at least Ware said he's feeling much better as the pain in his neck continues to subside.

"To be honest, I feel 100 percent better," Ware said on Tuesday. "Yesterday it was better after the game. Now it's feeling a lot better, getting a lot of strength in my neck back, so I'm happy right now."

Ware, who suffered a strained neck on Sunday, says he has no problem playing in this weekend's game in New Orleans, even if he doesn't make it to one practice all week, assuming he is cleared by doctors.

Since the Cowboys have an altered schedule and usually have Tuesday as a day off, the team wasn't required to send an injury report to the NFL. However, head coach Wade Phillips reiterated Ware's "day-to-day" status and said he is hopeful and even encouraged that Ware could play this week.

"I think if he can play, he'll play," Phillips said of Ware. "And if (the doctors) say he can't, then he won't. We want to be smart about it."

DeMarcus Ware Could Play This Week Against The Saints

Despite suffering a frightening neck injury in Sunday’s loss to San Diego (and seemingly despite earlier reports to the contrary), Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware could play in this Saturday’s showdown with the undefeated New Orleans Saints. This from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

Ware has not been ruled out of Saturday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Ware, who was taken the hospital for evaluation and released late Sunday night, has officially been diagnosed with a strained neck.

He is listed as day to day and could play Saturday, although the short week is a detriment.

“It’s day to day so there is a possibility,” coach Wade Phillips said. “He took quite a hit, but he’s really bounced back really strong. That’s encouraging for him and us. He came back a lot better (Monday) so we will just have to see.”

Without Ware, the highest paid player in Cowboys’ history, the reeling Cowboys will likely struggle to defend the Saints’ high-powered offense.

Cowboys OLB Demarcus Ware Will Probably Miss Game Vs. Saints

After getting carted off the field due to a scary-looking neck injury last Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Cowboys outside linebacker Demarcus Ware will likely miss at least one game, which means he would sit out the Cowboys' game against the Saints this Saturday.

The reeling Cowboys have rekindled their fans' fears of another December collapse by dropping their last two games to fall to 8-5, and out of first place in the NFC East. Dallas travels to take on the undefeated Saints this weekend, before finishing with a road game against the frisky Redskins (who should have won their first meeting), and closing with a home game against the Eagles.

Ware Sprains Neck Sunday, 'Has Full Movement In His Extremities'

It's one of the few times the phrase "just a sprained neck" is applicable, but if you saw DeMarcus Ware collapse to the ground where he then remained motionless, you would agree that it's appropriate in this case. And that is the official word coming from the Cowboys: a strained neck.

Ware was immobilized on a stretcher, carted off the field and taken to the hospital for X-rays and further evaluation.

The Cowboys, who provided the diagnosis of a sprained neck, also said Ware was "aware and alert with full movement and strength in his extremities."

Ware was pursing quarterback Philip Rivers early in the fourth quarter Sunday when he collided into Brandyn Dombrowski. Ware's head went straight into Dombrowski's upper leg, then Ware remained on the ground.
