The NFL has a long history of strictly enforcing its encyclopedia of rules, so this situation is worth watching. In the wake of Chris Henry's death, fellow Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco plans to wear Henry's number 15 jersey on Sunday. This, of course, is a violation of NFL rules. Pro Football Talk asked league spokesman Greg Aiello if he has anything to say in response.
Said Aiello via e-mail, "No."
Whether the league has a response if Ochocinco shows up wearing No. 15 on Sunday remains to be seen.
A response as curt as this one suggests to me that the NFL isn't really sure how to react to this. On one hand, Ochocinco's proposed gesture is sincere, tasteful, and honorable, and fans of any stripe will surely appreciate it. On the other hand, rules! Something has to give.
Update: Maybe not. For once, Ochocinco decides he won't "be a distraction."
