Wisconsin Hands No. 6 Duke First Challenge Loss
Madison, WI (Sports Network) - Trevon Hughes scored 26 points and Wisconsin toppled sixth-ranked Duke, 73-69, sending the Blue Devils to their first-ever loss while playing in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Jon Leuer added 17 points for Wisconsin, which handed Duke (6-1) its first loss in 11 Challenge games. Jason Bohannon scored 10 in the victory.
Kyle Singler tallied 28 points, while Nolan Smith scored 13 for the Blue Devils, who were coming off a 68-59 win over Connecticut on Friday in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
A three-pointer by Hughes widened Wisconsin's lead to 65-54 with 5:08 left before the game tightened. Three consecutive three-pointers from freshman Andre Dawkins had the Blue Devils within 67-65 with less than two minutes left.
Duke then had a chance to tie after misses from Leuer and Jordan Taylor, but Singler was denied on a drive to the hoop as Ryan Evans held his ground. Singler's shot clanked off the side of the backboard, and Bohannon made two at the line with 25.2 seconds left for a 69-65 margin.
Jon Scheyer hit a pair from the charity stripe, and Leuer made 1-of-2 before Singler's bucket from in close had Duke within 70-69 with 5.7 seconds remaining.
Hughes made two from the foul line, and the Badgers caught a break when Duke's ensuing inbounds pass went awry. Taylor made one foul shot to ice the victory.
Wisconsin jumped out to an early 17-7 lead and carried a 38-32 edge into the half.
Dawkins had 12 points and Scheyer 10...Under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Duke is 48-4 since the 1999-2000 season in December contests....Wisconsin was coming off a third-place finish at the Maui Invitational, registering a 2-1 record...Duke finished shooting 45.3 percent from the field, while Wisconsin finished at a 44.1 percent clip.
