Lane Kiffin Will Not Rest Until Urban Meyer's Trapper Keeper Is Covered In Spitballs

Never change, Lane.

Kiffin analyzed the SEC championship game during a radio interview on Tuesday. Here's what he had to say:

"It will be a real interesting match-up," Kiffin said. "Florida has better players, and Alabama has better coaches, so we'll see."

Yes, while the Vols won't be in Atlanta until New Year's Eve, this year's defeats in battles on the field have not prompted any cease-fire in the one-sided war of words.

As for Kiffin's prediction of the SEC championship game: "It's kind of hard to call," he said. "There's a bunch of great players on both teams. Florida has so much speed. I think you'll see Alabama will out-scheme Florida, and Florida has given up 28 sacks this year when a bunch of guys come free. But the problem is Superman (Tebow) is back there. It comes down to can you tackle him."

Read any Lane Kiffin quote about Tebow, and you would think he got turned down for an autograph or something. Read anything Lane Kiffin says about Florida, ever, and you get the feeling that he was really good at pestering those around him into submission in his adolescence. (I suppose the only reason there wasn't a Carlos Dunlap shot in there is because a DUI doesn't measure up to armed robbery.)

Perhaps, at some point in the future, Tennessee will have either the players or the coaches to either match up with Florida or Alabama or earn an SEC Championship Game berth. Until then, I guess we'll have to deal with the best thing about Tennessee football (Non-Eric Berry Division) being Lane Kiffin's mouth of mirth.

Wow, what a huge blast at Urban Meyer, to say that Nick Saban is better.

Why does Kiffin bother opening his mouth>

Kiffin = L_H_W of coaching

by GCM on Dec 2, 2009 5:15 PM EST reply actions

Why is it meyer can take shots at teams and players and the media eats it up but take a shot at king tebow or meyer and they come unglued. Seems to me the guy writing this is in love with meyer. Kiffin is right bama has better coaching. Nick saban builds his own programs meyer comes in and takes over other guys jobs who gave him the talent he needed and is succesfful because of his players. i find it so ammusing when a writer takes his little shots like this its like a qbs cheerleader gf defending her bf from attacks jocks are stupid. Teh fact the media doesnt see it is even more hilarious.

by redsoxfan32 on Dec 2, 2009 7:49 PM EST reply actions

ps i said it here first. Tennesee beats florida next year. 31-17 ill get blasted but im right. Florida with a top 5 defense and king tebow barely beat tenesee in the swamp this year. imagin what tenesee does to meyer with a rebuit defense and a new qb at helm next year for gators. Tenesee gets themselves a qb and florida may never beat kiffin.

Much like the days when Goober Manning was the QB at TN, Kiffin wants to make sure Florida kicks his butt every year til he gets fired.

by GreatBlueHeron on Dec 2, 2009 8:43 PM EST reply actions

All joking aside, Kiffin really does have a stupidity problem.  TN has neither the player or coaches of either Florida or Alabama.  I remember how the poor Vols fans used to chant "We own Alabama" to the tune of the legendary Skynard song, now they root for Bama because they can’t beat Florida on their own.  Too funny…

Alabama was undefeated and ranked #1 last year when Florida beat them, and it wasn’t with other coach’s recruits as redsox indicated.

Meyer and Saban are both good coaches and nobody proclaimed Urban to be light years ahead of Saban last year when Florida won, but if Bama wins this one, Haters like Sox will be on all the chat boards.  Any idiot that says Florida may never beat Tennessee (if of course they have a QB…disclaimer) again is simply delusional.  You will never hear me say TN will never beat UF again because, well, that is stupid.

I will predict that Florida beat UT next year again, though.  As a matter of fact, Florida will be in the running for the NC again.  They are a deep and talented team.  Maybe they beat Bama, maybe they don’t.  But they beat TN 5 times in a row now, so what Kiffin says is pretty much irrelevant to this game.

by SORT14 on Dec 2, 2009 11:22 PM EST reply actions

redsoxfan32, did you actually watch the game? You didn’t did you? You just saw the final score. ut scored that "1" touchdown with 4 mins left in the game. ut recieved a blessing when TEBOW fumbled the ball at the 6yd line. It was 23-6 at that point. The game wasn’t even close. As far as next year goes, no one will be able to find you after our QB John Brantley beats some QB ut hopes to "get". GO GATORS!!!

by archangeladidas on Dec 2, 2009 11:43 PM EST reply actions

You guys should not pay attention to redsoxfan32.  He has never had one good thing to say about the Tebow or Meyer.  He just posts on these boards to get a reaction.  Clearly, he has no clue what he is talking about.
The other day, I actually wished Kiffin well because the SEC is better when UT is good, but screw him.  Good luck UT with your moral victories.

What an absolutely biased post.  What he failed to mention was what other coaches said about the game.  Here are articles from the ESPM article:

"If it wasn’t for Tebow, it’s easy. Alabama wins the game." by Lane Kiffin.

"They don’t have the quick-strike capability they had with [Percy] Harvin and [Louis] Murphy," "They are a little more blue-collar."
S. Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson

"He (Tebow) isn’t doing it like he was doing it earlier, he’s been sacked a whole bunch of times. They are one of the worst teams in terms of protecting. He looks a little indecisive in the passing game. … He goes away from the first read and gets indecisive and starts running around and gets sacked." – Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks.

"People are coming free versus Florida," Kiffin said. "But Tebow is so hard to tackle."

Johnson put it simply: "If Alabama can run the ball, they’ll beat Florida."

"They are so schematically sound," If you do start to beat them, Nick and Kirby [Smart, the defensive coordinator] are so good. They adjust. They are an NFL staff. NFL offenses will expose you, but can you adjust?" Lane kiffin stated.

Kiffin called Saban’s Crimson Tide "the best-coached team in the country. They have few penalties. They allow few sacks. They’re very disciplined. They don’t give up big plays."

It is my opininion that Kiffin said the necest thing about both teams. We are all the gator fans and Kiffin haters, like you, up in arms about what the other coaches said?

If Kiffin said what Brooks said, the headline would read "Kiffin says Florida One of The Worst Teams"

Kiffin said NOTHING that was wrong or offensive.

by VolFaninMichigan on Dec 3, 2009 9:02 AM EST reply actions

Lane Kiffin hasn’t said anything that others haven’t said. There were three shows on ESPN that analysts said the same thing. They all called Saban the best coach in the SEC but the difference maker was Tebow.

by jaygill411 on Dec 3, 2009 9:05 AM EST reply actions

He’s like a little ****zu that you can’t ignore, it just yaps and barks and tries to bite and you’d just feel really bad giving it a good kicking.

If Tenn had "better coaches" maybe they would have instructed their players not to burglarize for chump change.

I’m not even fully sure if Tenn coaches are in the top half of their conference, but Florida and Bama… Lane, think before you speak. These teams might own Kiffin’s Vols for years to come, does he really want to taunt these giant programs?

Urban Meyer is one of the better coaches in ALL OF FOOTBALL. Saban is easily a Top 10 in College Football. I’m not even sure I’d put Kiffin in the Top 25 at the moment (coaches AND programs).

The post above that equates Lane Kiffin to the L_H_W (Lou_Holtz_Weis) of coaches is pretty good stuff (and I’m an ND fan).

LANE KIFFIN HEAD COACHING RECORD (NFL & NCAA): 12-20

This just proves Kiffrin’s an idiot. Saban’ better than Meyer? I would think Meyer’s two national title would prove otherwise.

by buckeyenut on Dec 3, 2009 11:21 AM EST reply actions

The biggest problem with Kiffin’s quotes are that the media is blowing them out of proportion.  Florida does have great players.  Alabama does have great coaches.  Does Kiffin’s opinions matter so much that they rate an article on a national sports website?  Or is the media trying to fan the flames?  Who cares what Lane Kiffin thinks about either program?

And why mention Carlos Dunlap’s DUI, or the two players charged with attempted armed robbery, in regards to the main topic of this article?  Kiffin didn’t mention Dunlap’s DUI.

Shut up and let Florida and Alabama decide the debate on Saturday.

Kiffin’s comments are the truth.  Nothing more, nothing less.  At least he’s honest, unlike Urban Liar.

by hikerman on Dec 3, 2009 1:13 PM EST reply actions

Another example of "media stereotyping."As pointed out by volsfaninmichigan,Kiffins comments were similar to many other SEC coaches and commentators remarks but they were excluded from the article. The media will pounce on any opportunity to reinforce the "Kiffin-is-a-brash-loud-mouth-punk-coach." The media doesn’t report what happens ,they merely search for "facts" that support their preexisting beliefs.

by goblueman on Dec 3, 2009 1:20 PM EST reply actions

As for best coach in SEC this year,Rich Brooks Kentucky, did more with less than anyone else.Meyer & Saban win because they know  how  to assemble a massive amount of talent.Urban has a sharp offensive mind and Saban knows his defense.

by goblueman on Dec 3, 2009 1:33 PM EST reply actions

Andy,

I am not sure if his quote about Tebow was intended to disparage…but perhaps he said it in a sarcastic tone that cannot be inferred as written?

I kind of like Lane Kiffin. The Vols need to get their swagger back. However, I worry that he is not aware of how things work in the southeast. That sort of arrogance does not fly down there.

by stanfUrdstinks on Dec 3, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions

A talentless Vols team made a Florida team look avg. I think the writer is worse than Kiffin. He obviously is a florida homer and does the same thing that he accuses Kiffin of doing (which Kiffin kinda is). I love it.
Keep it up Kiffin, you are making the SEC exciting in a Soap Opera kinda way.

by DannyHerron on Dec 3, 2009 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Lorie, thank you. Spot on. What is the big deal here? All the coaches were asked about the upcoming championship game. Kiffin didn’t say anything BAD about either team or their coaches. He didn’t take a jab at Meyer. All he did is say Bama has better coaching, not Florida’s coaching sucks, and Florida has more talent, not Bama’s players suck. People, quit stetching so far to creat controversy over everything Kiffin says. He has said about 3 or 4 things in the last 12 months that others haven’t said, and most of that was in response to somebody else’s remarks.

goblueman, you could be right. Brooks has done a great job, and not just this year. UK’s 4 consecutive bowl trips is proof of that. Personally, I think when you consider the turnover and the injuries at Tennessee, you can argue that Kiffin has done more with less than anybody else. Hell, just look at J Crompton!

buckeyenut, maybe that conclusion should wait for the end of this season? They may well both have 2 by the second week of January, and then I think you could argue Saban’s are better because they would be at 2 different schools.

by Vol85 on Dec 3, 2009 2:22 PM EST reply actions

If you keep sticking a mic in front of this idiot, he’s going to keep spewing out crap. He should know what better coaching looks like, he see’s it every Saturday on the other side of the field.

by RU4OU2 on Dec 3, 2009 2:58 PM EST reply actions

I love Kiffin – mostly because he riles everyone up!  I’d love to see every coach start saying EXACTLY what they think.  What sweet entertainment that would make.

Kiffin is the biggest tool in College Football. Keep burning those bridges Lane.

by Hippi-Kat on Dec 3, 2009 6:16 PM EST reply actions

buckeyenut: national championships aren’t a great measuring stick for judging a coach’s quality. If it was, they Larry Coker (1 national title) was a better coach than Mack Brown (0 national titles at the time Coker won his). That logic doesn’t fly. I’m not a fan of either program or coach, but I’d take Saban if I had first pick.

by tm33_08 on Dec 3, 2009 9:33 PM EST reply actions

Hippi-Kat:

Please tell me what Kiffin said that was wrong?  Was it that UF has the better players?  If so, that was loud and brash and he should be vilified.

We certainly don’t want coaches saying other team’s players are good!

This article and your comments are just ignorant.

by VolFaninMichigan on Dec 3, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions

Vol85 and Lorie,

I disagree that it doesn’t matter what Kiffn says about Bama and Fla.  He coaches a conference rival, and a traditionally strong one at that.

I’m okay wih Kiffin thinking Bama has better coaches and Fla with better players.  Maybe he’s right – maybe he’s wrong.  But he shouldn’t say it.  It only provides bulletin board material for his opponents.

I think it’s okay to say one team has a better rushing game, based on stats and opponents, or a better pass defense, etc.  But to generally state that one team’s players or coaches are "better" than the other is rally kinda personal and hard to prove anyway, even if you are "in the business" of coaching and are good at recognizing talent.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  Kiffin needs to learn from Saban – stick to your own team and don’t speak ill of other teams and their coaches.  Heck, when you listened to Bear Bryant, you would think Vanderbilt was about to beat Bama by 4 TD’s the next saturday!

I wonder how Tennessee fans (in general) feel about the "mouth of the South"?  Yeah, they like his recruiting, but I want to know how they feel about the various controversial statements he has made (and they are controversial not JUST because the press makes them a story, but because Kiffin makes it that way).  Do you LIKE this?  Do you feel it is smart of him?  I’ve heard some of you say it is calculated, to take the pressure off his players.  But they have lost, what, 4 or games so far?  don’t you think maybe that he should shut up and worry more about X’s and O’s, not to mention W’s and L’s?

by TallTexan on Dec 3, 2009 11:43 PM EST reply actions

For years Fulmer sat back and took the jabs and never said anything and let the talent level drop to the point that they finished 5-7 and he lost his job.  Kiffin came in and took the same skill players that Fulmer had, plugged in a few true freshmen and finished 7-5.  The same sports writers and internet posters calling Kiffin an idiot are the same ones that predicted Meyer and Tebow would hang 70 points on the Vols and shut Kiffin up, then they said Saban would make him look like a fool, when that didn’t happen they pinned their hopes on Spurrier and the Gamecocks.  Well, if Crompton had played better early in the year and UT actually had a kicker we wouldn’t be having this conversation at all, UT would be a 10-2 or 11-1 team.  Tennessee’s next qb’s family will be moving to Knoxville this month and he will be on campus in January and they also have a commitment from one of the top kickers.  Kiffin is adding speed, skill and size with this recruiting class.  So in a nutshell, I’ve heard it all this year and could care less what Kiffin says about other coaches nor do I care what sports writers and other teams fans say about Kiffin.  Keep worrying about what Kiffin is saying and keep turning a blind eye to what he is doing and you’ll be sitting here in the next couple of years wondering why your team got embarrassed by the Vols…..and yes I know what comments are going to be made back because like I said, I’ve heard it all this year.

Great post VolfaninMichigan and loriebamafan…this is a ridiculous story.

I really don’t understand how many of these posters get their panties in a bunch whenever the media blows up some radio interview about Kiffin’s comments….and they weren’t even offensive!!  He was simply asked about the game and he gave his honest opinion of the match-up.  I guess I can understand that he remarks that were off-color earlier this year earn him some extra attention, but dang guys.

by Volz79 on Dec 4, 2009 12:31 PM EST reply actions

Nice gibberish, UTChris and Volz79.

I (and other internet poosters) have my "panties in a wad", huh?  Cute, Volz79.

All of you Vols fans who defend Kiffin VERY much misunderstand the criticism.  Now, read s-l-o-w-l-y and see if you understand this.

Nobody is saying Kiffin is an idiot (not serious posters and journalists).  Got it?  Nobody is saying Kiffin hasn’t done a good job overall, and hasn’t out-performed Fulmer.

Also, nobody is saying that the media doesn’t blow out of proportion what Kiffin says.  They do.  The media is self-serving – it is in their best interest to make a story bigger.

But don’t let your bias blind you to the FACT that Kiffin likes the attention, he likes the controversy.  And he regularly makes patently STUPID remarks. He isn’t just a guy who doesn’t think, makes a casual statement, an the WHOOPS, an overzealous reporter blows it out of proportion.  That’s what Vols fans would have had us all believe when Kiffin told reporter that Albama wouldn’t allow them to wear orange in Tuscaloosa this year.  Helloooooo, Mcfly!  It was a home game for Alabama.  I’d be willing to BET that Kiffin was delighted to have been turned down, so that he could then "make it a story" with an all-too-willing press.  That’s what he does, casts aspersions on the coaches of other teams, and then clueless Vol fans jump to his rescue SIMPLY because they like the way the team is playing better his year.

LOOK – I’m a Bama fan, yet when Nick Saban does or says something wrong, I’ll be one of the first to admit I don’t like it and I’m disappointed.  And if Saban spouted off like Kiffin did, I would be right in there with everyone else saying "I wish Saban would just shut up about the players and coaches of other teams, and refs, and concentrate on the next Bama opponent."  Fortunately for me, I don’t have to do that.

But hey, Vols, you go ahead and keep saying the media is hyping Kiffin’s remarks and that you love him, and that apparently the fans of other teams that criticize him are only angry that the Vols weren’t destroyed thoroughly by their teams, like they expected.  Gooooood logic.

Maybe Kiffin is the second coming of Neyland in Knoxville.  But whether he is successful or not, he won’t garner much respect from me, personally, until he learns that his thoughts need to at least take a pit stop in his brain before they spill out of his mouth.  When you are paid executive wages, you are expected to perform in ways other than on JUST the football field.

by TallTexan on Dec 4, 2009 4:12 PM EST reply actions

TallTexan, congrats on beating the Gators but you need to take the crimson glasses off and reread it.  Did I defend Kiffin, no, I said I could care less what he says.  Football is entertainment, no more no less.  Why would I care what Kiffin says about other teams.  Why do you care what Kiffin says, he doesn’t coach your team.  People put too much emphasis into that crap.  Recruit good players and win games, that’s his job.  You are a Bama fan, do you think any Vol fan, Kiffin or any player cares what other fans think….he wasn’t hired to please you.  The only gibberish on this board is you, what Kiffin said about the SECCG came true, Bama was better coached and out schemed Florida…..he gives your team a compliment and you bitch about it.
