Updated throughout the day with quick takes from staff.
Postgame interviews are almost always boilerplate quotes from athletes eager to get off the field and either celebrate or mourn what just transpired on the field. So it's all the more noteworthy when one of them is halfway fascinating, even for being utterly bizarre. Which is why we must stand up and take note of the gem Panthers receiver Steve Smith left with NBC's Andrea Kremer last night following his team's victory over Minnesota.
Here's the opening salvo:
You know, first, you know, I just gotta thank my Lord Jesus Christ, you know, without him we wouldn’t be here. But, 5-8 or 8-5, you gotta play. This is why I feed my family. This is why I grew up on the B.
Yeah, the B. Gotta love the B. (What's the B?) Sa-da-tay, my dammies.
That would have been good enough but wait, it gets better from there.
Andrea Kremer: "You were fired up. I mean, after the third quarter, you were just going nuts on the field, on the sidelines. What was going through your mind?"
Steve Smith: "You know, uh… [smiles] You know, #22 [28-year-old Vikings cornerback Benny Sapp] had something to say to me on the field. So, little youngster…
Andrea Kremer: "What did he say?"
Steve Smith: "Ah, you know, just telling me who he is, so I had to establish the rules and regulations of the game…"
Andrea Kremer: "Which were?"
Steve Smith: "Which was 89."
Q.E.D.
Well done, Steve Smith. You may have only helped win a relatively meaningless game for the Panthers, but you will forever remain a beacon of hope for those craving more than banal postgame quotes.

I don’t care what Carolina’s record is; Steve Smith is a killer. I watched him hang about twenty catches on my Bears not too long ago. Now Sapp, who leads the league in taunting from a nobody, got lit on fire and kicked under the wheels. What a dumbass.

That is the REAL Steve Smith. A MAN in the NFL!! Too bad he’s got no help on the Panthers. #90 plays about 2-3 good games a year & Beason is a BEAST! Other than that……..

I WISH STEVE SMITH PLAYED FOR MORE TEAMS THAN JUST THE PANTHERS. HE IS A CANDIDATE FOR PLAYER OF THE QUARTER CENTURY
