Bruins Nation: UCLA Shows Grit And Athleticism To Win EagleBank Bowl

Our UCLA blog, Bruins Nation, weighs in or Tuesday's EagleBank Bowl. They admit that is was far from pretty, but it's a still win -- a bowl win -- and it gave the Bruins a winning record in 2009.

It certainly wasn't a pretty first half. The Bruins flat out didn't show up to play in the first 30 minutes and even in the second 30 minutes, it wasn't a perfectly played half for UCLA, but they did what they needed to do to win the game, 30-21. That's a bowl game win, a great way to send the seniors off and an 7-6 record for the year, which is the first over-.500 season under CRN. [...]

In the end, it was the Bruins' athleticism that won out. Austin's TD was in large part due to the speed Austin had, being able to gallop down the sideline. Ayers' magnificent pick was just a pure athletic play and the UCLA defense turned when they were able to get into space and run.

EagleBank Bowl: UCLA, Temple Bring DC It's Only Hope For Postseason Football

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Kevin Prince threw for 221 yards and a pair of touchdowns as UCLA rallied from a 14-point deficit to down Temple, 30-21, at the EagleBank Bowl from chilly RFK Stadium.

Nelson Rosario posted four catches for 66 yards and one score for the Bruins (7-6), who finished the season, their first winning campaign since 2006, with victories in four of their last five games.

Chane Moline added 69 yards on 15 carries and Terrence Austin had a TD reception for UCLA, which won its first bowl game since the 2005 Sun Bowl over Northwestern.

Vaughn Charlton finished 13-of-23 for 159 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Owls (9-4), who posted their first winning season since 1990 but failed in their bid to win their first bowl appearance since 1979.

Bernard Pierce racked up 53 yards and a score on the ground with 33 yards on three catches for Temple, which won its last postseason game, over Cal, at the Garden State Bowl.
