Mark Sanchez, who sat out last week, is set to return to practice Wednesday, but his status for Sunday's game against the Falcons is still up in the air.
After sitting out last week to rest his injured knee, Mark Sanchez is set to return to the Jets' practice field on Wednesday, but his status for Sunday's game against the Falcons is still up in the air and head coach Rex Ryan isn't in a rush to name a starter.
Sanchez will return to practice Wednesday, Rex Ryan said late today in a conference call with reporters. Ryan, perhaps engaging in a little gamesmanship, wouldn't say if Sanchez will start Sunday against the Falcons. He said he wants to see Sanchez in practice before making a decision. Ryan hopes to have Sanchez and Kellen Clemens split the reps on Wednesday.
Ryan has also said he will be cautious in naming a starter lest he make snap judgment like last week.
"I thought he would play last week, at the beginning of the week, but I was wrong," Ryan said Monday. "I think we made the right decision. Those extra days of treatment are going to help Mark. We'll see what it's like (tomorrow)."
Assuming he is healthy enough, Sanchez will split the first-team reps with Clemens.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Jets will sit rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez on Sunday against Tampa Bay due to the sprained PCL he suffered on a headfirst dive last week.
Backup Kellen Clemens will start in Sanchez’s place.
According to CBS Sports, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez missed the team’s practice on Monday as he recovers from his PCL strain.
Nonetheless, Jets head coach Rex Ryan reiterated that they are optimistic that Sanchez will play this weekend when the Jets travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers. If Sanchez does play, Ryan said he would wear braces on both knees.
With the Patriots’ loss last week, the Jets are suddenly only a game back in the AFC East. While Sanchez has had his share of rookie struggles this year, the team apparently trusts him much more than they do backup Kellen Clemens.
The word on Mark Sanchez’s knee is that it is sprained, not strained, and his status for their next game on December 13 at Tampa is unknown. The severity of the sprain is also unknown.
Regardless, head coach Rex Ryan wasn’t pleased with the headfirst dive that caused the injury, especially after the team brought in Joe Girardi to teach him the fine art of sliding feet first (which is completely ridiculous, for the record. I mean, how hard is it to slide? Little kids do it without instruction. See now, what you do, Mark, is you throw your feet out first in front of you, and then fall on your ass):
“I love the kid, but he’s got to grow up and understand he represents our entire organization,” Ryan said. “We want what’s best for him.”
I asked Ryan what he thought Girardi was thinking if he was watching the game and saw Sanchez diving headfirst. “He’s probably calling him a knucklehead or something like that,” he said. “He’s our knucklehead and we love him.”
Rex Ryan says he thinks Mark Sanchez (knee) will be ready to play next week against Tampa Bay.
Rex Ryan says he is optimistic that Mark Sanchez’s knee problem is a strain. Will get an MRI tomorrow.
Pro Football Talk notes that Mark Sanchez has been fitted with a knee brace.
Solomon Wilcots of NFLN reports that Sanchez is being fitted for a brace on his right knee, apparently in advance of returning to action.
Mark Sanchez closed out the first half with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Edwards to put the Jets on top 16-10.
However, early in the second half he left the game with a knee injury, courtesy of one those new-fangled slides we've been hearing so much about. Sanchez limped during the next play and left the field in a hurry to get checked out.
No word on whether or not he'll return. It's the second-straight game Sanchez has injured himself on a sliding play.
